While English isn't the most spoken language on earth, it is the language that is spoken in most places in the world. This is what designates English as a Global Language. If you want to have your phones manufactured in China, you'll need to know English. You're from Russia, and spending your holiday at a hotel in North Bali. Most people consider English to be a global language because it is the one language that is spoken and understood by the majority of the population in almost every region of the world. What is a global language? While there is no official definition, it refers to a language that is learned and spoken internationally by native and second language speakers (Mastin, 2011). There are approximately 360 million native English speakers and almost twice as many speaking it as a second language, making English one of the topmost spoken languages in the world (Klappenbach, 2019). English is undoubtedly in just about every sector whether it is in education, medicine, business, technology, tourism, communication, and so on. It is perhaps this worldwide... [Read more]

The Global Benefits of English as a Second Language - TEFL Blog

At a very early age, I was amazed by the sounds of English. I used to listen to songs in English while one of my parent's friends was cleaning his car. He used to play them out loud and I wanted to know what the lyrics said. Several years later I had the chance to go to China to be part of a cultural exchange program to learn Chinese. My accepting interview was completely in English rather than Chinese or even my native language Spanish. All paperwork was done in either Spanish or Chinese depending on where I was. Either here in Latin-American or on the other side of the world, the medium of communication was English.

English is one of them. It is spoken and written by billions of people around the world. Having traveled in eight countries myself, I was surprised to have seen how commonplace it was for countries to translate directional signs in both the official language and in English. A student's mastery of the English language, or in any language, can be a difficult journey to venture. Therefore, this essay will explore what factors may motivate a student to learn English.

English language learning plays a big role in international education, and globalization has pushed English to evolve into a global language (Crystal, 2003). In his book, English as a Global Language, Crystal acknowledges that while multilingualism remains a critical world resource, he argues that a common language is still necessary. In an increasingly interconnected world, a global language connects nations and individuals on an international field. International education serves to promote global awareness and engagement, international understanding, respect for differences, and commitment to peace (Tate, 2013). English as a global language is necessary to fulfill the purpose of international education because it serves as a connection to... [Read more]
