I briefly remember the first time I recited in front of our classroom during a Public Speaking subject, I was tasked to recite a short story about Florence, the Nightingale. I still remember the words as if it were only yesterday. After finishing the task, our then professor told us about the importance of learning the English vocabulary and consider it as our second language if we wanted to succeed in the corporate world. Eight years after my recitation, I find myself discussing business matters with Italian suppliers in Treviso, Italy and I will not forget the surprised look on their faces: They were amazed at how a middle-aged woman like me, who comes from a developing country, can communicate with them in English more fluently than any of their... English achieved the global status of an international language since it is recognized worldwide. It became global due to native speakers' economic power. Initially, British imperial power spread the English language to many countries. It provided communication between ethnic groups. International researchers say that more than 400 million people are speaking English as their first language and many more people using English as a second language. I am one of these people, I was taught English since middle school.

At a very early age, I was amazed by the sounds of English. I used to listen to songs in English while one of my parent's friends was cleaning his car. He used to play them out loud and I wanted to know what the lyrics said. Several years later I had the chance to go to China to be part of a cultural exchange program to learn Chinese. My accepting interview was completely in English rather than Chinese or even my native language Spanish. All paperwork was done in either Spanish or Chinese depending on where I was. Either here in Latin-American or on the other side of the world, the medium of communication was English.
