Teach TEFL in The Dominican Republic
Date posted:2009-03-16 | Writer: Academia Internacional de Cabrera | Email: [email protected]
The Academia Internacional de Cabrera (AIC) is seeking two energetic and creative teachers for the 2009-2010 school year. AIC was established 2 years ago in the small town of Cabrera on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic. The aim of the school is to provide a quality, affordable bilingual education (Spanish and English) to local children.
Located in a former disco, the pre-K through 7th grade school has around 100 students (90 Dominicans and about a dozen foreign students from the US, France, and Switzerland). There are currently 6 core staff (from the DR, England, Canada and Puerto Rico), 3 pre-school teachers, and 5 ancillary staff who teach... [Read more]

Motivation as a Tool to Get Students Interested
According to the Oxford Dictionary, motivation is 'the desire or willingness to do something.' On the one hand, most of the students who take a foreign language course should have the desire and enthusiasm to learn and develop their skills in that second language; for future career prospects, travel purposes, to study or live in a country whose local language is different from their mother tongue, etc. On the other hand, a few of them won't have any interest at all and they will attend the lessons with neither intention nor motivation.

3 Common Pronunciation Problems for Students in Peru
Difficulty with pronunciation is likely something that every EFL teacher will face at one point or another in their career. Every language in the world has different ways of pronouncing different words/ letters. In addition to this, most speakers of other languages have heavy accents that can make pronouncing English words very difficult. This can be a challenge when teaching English as a foreign language. It can be especially challenging because not all learners around the world will face the same problems. Students in Vietnam will likely have different pronunciation problems than students in Kenya and students in Brazil will likely have different pronunciation problems than students... [Read more]

Volunteer Teaching: Why I Decided to Become a Volunteer Teacher
For the past several years I have been working for a non-profit company that provides high-quality daycare and preschool education for financially disadvantaged children. The population we serve is diverse, but the majority of families in our particular centers are Latino. Although I am not employed in a classroom teaching position, I have a great deal of contact with the children and with their parents. Part of my responsibility is to conduct an intake interview with the parents to explain the policies of the school, and to do a health history of the child before he enters. These meetings take about forty minutes when the parent speaks English, and an hour or more... [Read more]

Why you should volunteer as a teacher at least once in your life?
What does it mean to volunteer? According to the Oxford Dictionary: "A volunteer is a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task", according to me, volunteering is a life-changing experience where you are able to help others.

Why is TEFL Certification a Must for Non-Native Teachers?
In today's world, teaching English has become a mainstream job, no longer limited to native speakers. Everywhere you go, you will find nationals from various countries teaching English with sometimes rather strong accents. What are their motivations and why would schools choose non-natives to teach English in the first place?

Volunteer ESL Teaching: Challenges and Opportunities
I took the ITTT online TEFL course not to prepare to teach English as an employee working abroad, but as a volunteer in the United States to teach refugee and immigrant adults. I completed the units a few months ago, but I waited to do this summative task until I could begin teaching classes as a volunteer teacher and reflect on that experience.
