Alumna Story: ✅ TEFL Teaching as a Dream Job - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Alumni Experiences Teaching Ideas
Being a teacher has been a dream of mine since childhood, and as time goes by, I started to understand that life is, in fact, a continuous teaching and learning experience. The fact that I could impact someone's life is the greatest reward to be a teacher. My primary reason why I have decided to pursue education is that I naturally feel the strong desire and happiness to positively influencing and educating people. One of the major satisfactions of being a teacher is to enrich a student's life. The essential qualities of this profession would be patience, understanding, compassion, and flexibility.

Many people may think that the worst part of being an Uber driver are the belligerent midnight trips from downtown to the suburbs or the aggressive pre-coffee commuters or the fact that a five-minute drive can take thirty minutes because of gridlock. However, as an Uber driver of one year, I believe that the worst part about the job are trips to the airport. When I interacted with passengers going to the airport, I would think of all the new things they would get to try and the different cultures they would learn about. The problem with these trips was they were a constant reminder that the world is just waiting for us to explore it, but I was stuck leading a conventional and mundane life.

Having spent more than 20 years as a marketing consultant, I decided to change career, to become an English language teacher. Hence, I took up the 120-hour TEFL course with ITTT, along with a specialised course in teaching young learners and another one in teaching business English. Even before I finished my TEFL course, I was offered a teaching job with a private school in Bangkok, Thailand. I have since been teaching kindergarten kids for about 8 months.

I worked as an Emirates Airlines flight attendant for over 6 years. In order to be accepted you need to pass multiple group exercises, a written exam and a two person interview. There are always over a thousand applicants but they only accept a very small number. Two years ago I left the company and moved to Vietnam where I noticed a great interest in younger people wanting to become flight attendants, but many were fearful of the Open Day, a two day process of interviews and exercises because they were not sure if their level of English was good enough. It didn't take long for me and two friends, who had also worked for the same airline, to decide to put together an 8 day course for people interested in becoming a flight attendant.

My teaching experience began in a whirlwind. I graduated from college a semester ahead of my class, married, lived with my husband in my sister's basement for two months, and moved to South Korea. We had no idea what to expect. Sure, we'd read the blogs, talked to the director of our school, and even talked with people we know who had lived and taught in Korea. It still didn't fully prepare us for what to expect, how amazing it would be, and how hard. We lived in South Korea for 19 months teaching three through seven year olds daily and first through third graders several times each week.

My friends and I live in a predominantly Indian neighborhood in a suburban Midwest town in the United States. Most of our neighbors are Indian nationals who are in the US temporarily on corporate-sponsored work visas, families where one or both parents work outside the home during the day while their children attend local American public schools. One of my friends, a high school math teacher, was asked by her neighbor to tutor two elementary school-aged children in English, her son in first grade, and her daughter in third grade.
