How to Build Confidence in Chinese Business Students - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Teaching Ideas
Self-confidence has been seen as a major contributor to a person learning a language. As a teacher and a counselor, I agree with Jack Welch's quote: Giving people self-confidence is by far the most important thing that I can do because then they will act. Confidence exists of three realms: who I am, what I can learn, and what I can do. These are steps that can be taken to help Chinese Business English students improve confidence in these realms.
What is self-confidence?
Who am I?
What can I learn?
What can I do?

In the field of TEFL, teaching English for specific language functions involves focusing on language skills needed for particular purposes or situations. This approach goes beyond teaching general language proficiency and targets specific tasks or interactions that learners may encounter in real-life scenarios. Examples of specific language functions include making requests, giving directions, expressing opinions, and negotiating. By understanding the importance of specific language functions, TEFL teachers can tailor their lessons to meet the practical needs of their students.

Strategies to Build Confidence in Students - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Teaching Ideas
When teaching students most of the time we mainly focus on just teaching them the language and having them pass some tests and that is how we measure if they have learned well or not. In reality, it is a bit different though. Knowing how to read, speak or write a language does not necessarily translate to the student excelling in the language. There is another often ignored factor called confidence. Confidence is necessary for success in many parts of life and it is no different when learning. One of the greatest gifts we can give our students is to instill in them a strong sense of confidence. In doing this, we enable them to be higher achievers.

How Confidence Can Affect a Language Student's Performance - TEFL Blog

Alumni Experiences Teaching Ideas
When a new teacher goes into a classroom for the first time they are confronted with the reality of human students, rather than what they have learned about teaching from a book. Often what they find is that much of what goes on does not necessarily follow their carefully planned lesson, as real life and the unpredictability of human nature can get in the way. Perhaps only after a couple semesters of experience can a teacher really figure out what to do with all levels of students to help build self-confidence in a skillful manner.

A teacher has an important responsibility to get to know his or her students to ensure that they are engaged with the lesson on a daily basis. Learning another language is not easy so it is imperative that a teacher does everything in his or her power to get to know their students and become as familiar with them as possible. One of the most effective ways a teacher can begin to do so is by establishing rapport with their students.

Key Factors to Increase Confidence in The Classroom - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Teaching Ideas
I will never forget my first day in front of a class of students, and especially the night before the first lesson. I did not sleep much and spent the night planning and organizing every single detail, I remember even training the "teacher face" in front of the mirror. The morning the crucial moment arrives, and I find myself in front of sixty eyes looking at me and waiting. There are probably stress and expectations from both sides. It is at this precise moment we do not want to misstep, and want to start the lesson confidently. The confidence is a quality expected from an adult in the position to lead a group of students, but is it indispensable? How important is confidence in the classroom? Should we practice to increase our confidence as a teacher?... [Read more]

One of the most important traits a teacher can bring into the classroom is confidence. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary Confidence is "a feeling or consciousness of one's powers or reliance on one's circumstances" and " faith or belief that one will act in a right, the proper, or efficient way". When a teacher is confident in the classroom it will help create a more relaxed and trusting environment.

How can I support English language learners who are struggling with confidence in speaking English? - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ ITTT TEFL & TESOL
Creating a safe and encouraging atmosphere is essential for English language learners (ELLs) to feel comfortable practicing their speaking skills. Start by establishing a classroom or learning environment where mistakes are seen as opportunities for growth rather than failures. Encourage peer support and collaboration to foster a sense of community among students. Additionally, be mindful of cultural differences and be respectful of each student's background and language abilities.
One effective way to support ELLs struggling with confidence in speaking English is to provide ample opportunities for practice and participation. When working with a large group, it is important to maintain class management to ensure all students can learn the material. I had the opportunity to manage a group of six and seven-year-old students in the past and I am aware that it can be rather difficult to keep children on task. Throughout my internship, I was able to see what skills worked and what needed improvement. After reading unit 5, from the online course, I was able to connect concepts and thoughts I had from managing my class. Now that I am aware of new concepts it is easier to see how teachers can manage a classroom in a friendly but orderly manner.

In learning, self-confidence is one of the important elements of a student. When students are more confident about their ability to do something, they are more likely to readily engage in the activity in the classroom. They will work longer and harder at it than when they doubt their capability. The sense of self-confidence enables them to accomplish tasks perfectly and build motivation. From that, they would be more successful in life.
