The idiom "white elephant" refers to an expensive item that is costly to maintain, for example: Shortly after Tanya inherited her aunt's castle, it turned out to be a white elephant she could not afford. The phrase originates from a long time ago when white elephants where regarded as precious and even holy in Asia, especially in Thailand. When the king was displeased with someone, he would gift them a white elephant as the upkeeping would likely ruin them.

Tefl reviews - Me Vs I English Grammar Teaching Tips - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ ITTT
In this video we take a look at the difference between "me" and "I". While they are often used without a problem in normal sentences, they are often used incorrectly in certain situations. For example, in the sentence "can you send the report to Ian and I" the use of "I" is incorrect. It should be "can you send the report to Ian and me" The reason for this is that "I" is a subject pronoun and ?me" is an object pronoun. If you remove Ian from the sentence, it becomes clear that the use of "I" is wrong. You would not say ?can you send the report to I" but you would say "can you send the report to me?". This is an easy trick to see which of the two is the correct one. Watch the video and give it a try.

Tefl reviews - Coursebooks And Materials/use Wipe Board - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ ITTT
So let's have a look at some of the more general issues when using the wipe board. Perhaps the most important thing to start with is that we should start with a clean board. Secondly it's always very useful to make a board plan so that you know where things are going to appear on the board by the end of your lesson. It?s very simple to do a board plan. Just take a sheet of paper, which is similar in shape to the board that you're going to use, and then onto that piece of paper decide where all the information that's going onto your board is going to be by the time that you've finished. So a very simple board plan just to show where the information is going to be. Also it's very useful if you make use of tables and columns to separate different areas of your work and in the same way... [Read more]

Can I teach English overseas with a background in engineering? - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ ITTT TEFL & TESOL
Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is a popular choice for individuals looking to work abroad and immerse themselves in a different culture. While a background in engineering may not be directly related to teaching English, it is still possible to transition into a career in TEFL. Many countries have a high demand for English teachers, and having a technical background can bring a unique perspective to the classroom.
To teach English overseas, most employers require a TEFL certification. While a degree in English or Education is beneficial, it is not always a strict requirement. Your engineering background can demonstrate problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic, which are all valuable traits in a teacher. Some countries may also require a bachelor's... [Read more]
How Discipline Affects Motivation In and Out of Japanese Classrooms - TEFL Blog

I work in two schools. I am an assistant language teacher at one commercial (low-level English) high school, and an integrated (high-level English) academic junior high and high school. I have had experiences with different kinds of students, Japanese-English teachers, and classroom atmospheres. In Japan, students take an entrance exam to get into high school. If they scored low on the entrance exam, then they are placed in the lowest ranking class. Each school has a certain number of classrooms for each grade. Both of my high schools have six classes total for each grade. There are usually around forty to forty-two students in each class as well. Teaching forty plus students in a crowded classroom is difficult. And unlike many stereotypes of... [Read more]
What are the challenges of teaching English in a non-English speaking environment? - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ ITTT TEFL & TESOL
One of the primary challenges of teaching English in a non-English speaking environment is the language barrier. Students may struggle to understand instructions, explanations, and conversations in English, leading to frustration and hindering their learning progress. Teachers need to find creative ways to overcome this barrier, such as using visual aids, gestures, and simplified language. Additionally, adapting teaching materials to suit the language proficiency level of the students is crucial in ensuring effective communication and comprehension.
Another significant challenge is navigating cultural differences in the classroom. Teaching English involves not only language instruction but also imparting cultural knowledge and understanding. In a non-English speaking environment, students... [Read more]
How Good Classroom Management Depends On Exemplary Teacher Behavior - TEFL Blog

When a class is managed well, there is a minimum of disruptions that distract from learning. This is more of an issue in a class for children, as opposed to adults. Nevertheless, in all classes, maintaining the comportment of the group to facilitate learning is the objective of sound classroom management techniques. Furthermore, it is also important to develop cordial and friendly relations with learners on an individual basis, and with the class as a whole. Having a rapport with students, and creating a classroom community that is based on shared rules and norms that are understood and reasonable for everybody, is an essential part of classroom management. When accomplished, this creates a classroom culture that students feel safe and welcome in. This... [Read more]

Tefl reviews - English Grammar Past Continuous Teaching Ideas Tesol - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ ITTT
In this video we look at a TESOL teaching idea for the past continuous tense. For this activity students are put into groups and are handed pictures of people doing different activities. The pictures are placed upside down in a pile and the students take it in turns to turn them over. When they have turned over a card they must make a past continuous sentence based on the picture they have. For example: If they turn over a picture of a woman swimming they would say: She was swimming yesterday. For more advanced students this activity can be used to compare past continuous and past simple. For example: While I was doing the washing up, I broke three plates. For this TEFL teaching idea we ask the students to look at a scene in a hospital where there are several people doing different things. Students are given time to memorise the picture before it is turned over. The students would then be asked to say what the people were doing in the picture. For example: A nurse was giving a patient an injection. A man was pouring a glass of water. As the trainer notes in the video, this activity can be adapted to make it into a competition by having students in teams compete to remember as many actions as they can. Grammar points such as this are often seen as fairly boring to most English language students, especially those who do not choose to study English. Possible Methods of Encouraging and Motivating ESL Students - TEFL Blog

Students in ESL classes, especially those newer to English, face what may seem to be a daunting set of tasks related to learning a new language. A teacher's encouragement will ease the students' stress, provide positive feedback and, gently, areas of improvement, and provide an amicable environment conducive to learning. The age and experience level of the students should be considered in what specific words of encouragement are given--too effusive and older, more experienced students may be turned off, while too complicated and the younger students may not appreciate the teacher's phrasing.
