Working with Thai Students – Four Fundamental Values - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Alumni Experiences
It is not easy to describe a nation or a country simply since people should be considered as individuals, but there are definitely some national characteristics in Thailand that make it very different from any other country. When in the Western world, especially in Europe, we need a lot of space and privacy and are often expected to be able to work unprompted, in Thailand things are done collectively. There are no "I's" in a team, literally. Understanding how these teams work and their sometimes not so obvious hierarchy it is much easier to adapt and be accepted as a part of them.

Why English Speaking is Difficult for Many Thai Learners - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Teaching Ideas
Thailand is famously known as " the land of smiles". In some situations, smiling is the way to save face or to avoid conflicts. This often includes the time when Thai people have to communicate with foreigners in English and have no idea what the other meant. They simply smile to get out of a situation instead of making the best out of it by practicing their English speaking skill. On the other hand, they build up a fear of making mistakes and avoid being in that particular circumstance in the future. As English today plays important roles in tourism and the Thai economy as a whole, still, Thai people struggle to communicate effectively. Here are some areas suggested why it is difficult for Thai learners to improve their speaking skills.

3 Reasons Why Thai Students Have a Slow Progress in Learning English - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Teaching Ideas
Having seen Thailand being ranked 64th globally and 16th in Asia in the EF English Proficiency Index 2018, it triggered me to look back on how most Thai students including me learned English in schools. Based on my experience as a student who studied English both in a bilingual-program private school and a Thai government school, plus my experience working at Wall Street English and Shrewsbury International School, I would like to group the major problems for Thai learners into 3 main topics, i.e. the quality of the teachers, the teaching approach and the attitude of the students towards English.

Is Tutoring Better Than Teaching a Group? - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Alumni Experiences
At its core, the same teaching principles and skills must be required and initiated for teaching one student or a group of 30 students. However, the key difference is time. An academic hour is 50 minutes, take 5 minutes to warm up and five minutes cool down, and this leaves 40 minutes for a class of 30 students. If one was to speak directly with every student, this equates to 1.33 minutes per student. Obviously, it would be pointless to do this, as not alone would each student get such little time as not to be of benefit. With one to the one, you get to spend the full 50 minutes with one student. Learning a language, be it a person's native language or a second language, it takes time and practice.

Why Learning L2 is Harder Than L1 - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Alumni Experiences
Over the past two years, as part of an international community, I've had the pleasure of meeting people from all over the world. We share the common experience of learning an L2. I've spoken to nearly 100 people now, and what I've learned about learning L2 is, well, it's hard.
So why is learning L2 so much harder than L1?
L2 is challenging to learn, especially for older adults.
This makes L2 very hard to use spontaneously in certain situations.
As you can see, this lack of necessity is quite damaging to L2.
Why? Maybe I just don't possess a natural ability to learn.
Our L1 learning is so gradual.
This has become very apparent to me throughout my TEFL course.

9 Small Details That Matter When Teaching EFL - TEFL Blog
Linda Dunsmore
Teaching Ideas
When you teach English as a foreign language it's important to pay attention to details that we sometimes ignore when communicating with other native level speakers, either in spoken or written English. Some people have got into the habit of writing in uppercase/capital letters, use abbreviations, and don't think much about punctuation. We also tend not to be too critical of people's spoken English as long as we get the point across. 'There's a lot of cars on the road today' is grammatically incorrect for example.

Being a Teacher is More Than Just Teaching - TEFL Blog

I haven't been a teacher for very long, but I have noticed more and more, since taking this course that a classroom can succeed if a teacher knows that teaching isn't just the passing of information. The teacher must understand that there are many different types of learners, that they must build a rapport with these learners, and they must tailor lessons based on these aspects. Teaching is more than just teaching a subject or language; this is the best thing I've learned from my ITTT classes.

I would like to start by first explaining what means to teach, which by a vague definition is to cause the student to learn and acquire the knowledge that is taught in the classroom to meet all the objectives that are previously set by the institution and by the teacher.
