The role of a teacher plays a critical role in a classroom setting. They are seen as leaders and someone for the learners to provide support and guidance. A great example of the impact of a teacher was in a previous lesson where it shows a comparison of two videos. One video showed the teacher being rude, disrespectful, uninterested, and inpatient among many things. He was rushing through his lesson, causing confusion among the students, and made it dreadful to be in the classroom. The other video showed positive examples of how to be a great teacher. The most valuable trait the teacher exhibited was by ensuring a healthy and positive learning environment. He started the lesson by smiling, greeting the students, and learning their names. Afterward,... [Read more]

At the cafeteria during lunchtime, a student of mine approached and asked me, "Why did you become a teacher?" Dumbfounded by this brazen question, I did not know what to say. I could have chosen motherhood statements like "I want to make a difference in the world," "to have a positive impact on my student's lives, "or that "I love children." I ended up saying to him, "Well, I am good at teaching." However, the truth of the matter is, I needed a job and there was an opportunity so I took it. You can say it was fate that called me to be a teacher. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine myself being a Grade 3 homeroom teacher! The Four Roles of a Teacher - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Alumni Experiences
Many people think that teachers are just people with knowledge and teach; however, teachers are way more than that. There is a Chinese old saying, "Being a teacher for one day, respect them as a father for life." What this means is that teachers usually have many responsibilities, just like students' parents. Most of the time, teachers need to adapt to various roles in different situations during the class or even outside of the class. The five main roles that teachers play are instructor, controller, role model, and counselor.
1. Instructor
2. Controller
3. Role Model
4. Mentor

The roles of an English teacher in a TEFL classroom are varied and depend largely on the stage of the lesson and the situations that may arise, both planned and unplanned. Many people see the teacher as the main source of information and an example of the English language. This, in a sense, is the primary role of a teacher; however, in order to fulfill the ultimate goal a teacher has, they must create a productive atmosphere in the class and a good, working relationship with their students.

It still didn't fully prepare us for what to expect, how amazing it would be, and how hard. We lived in South Korea for 19 months teaching three through seven year olds daily and first through third graders several times each week.
