Teaching English pronunciation to students of other languages is always a big deal.
One of the biggest challenges when teaching English to Italians is its phonetics.
I personally witnessed pronunciation difficulties when I taught English in Italy in high school last year.
Apart from Italian students, I also taught a small group of French, Latin-American, and Arabic migrants, recently arrived in Italy. Not only did they have a low level of Italian, but they were... [Read more]

The Most Common Problems Students in Italy Face When Learning English
According to the EF English Proficiency Index, in the year 2017 Italy ranked last - among European countries - in English proficiency skills. Being an Italian myself and having studied foreign languages up to my Master's Degree, I have progressively grown aware of the main factors which cause Italy to perform so poorly. Other than grammatical gaps, which are not to be analyzed in this context, I have noticed how the extremely limited exposition to spoken words can affect not only the students' ability to understand and follow conversations or arguments, but even the possibility for them to be understood when trying to speak.

Which ‘English’ Should I Teach?
English is a language that has a variety of dialects: particularly, there are three different major English segments. English (American ), English (Australian), and English (British or Uk). The three segments have differences in the way they are written and spoken. In this article, I will compare American English versus British English and my own experience with these two.

Several Common Challenges for French-Speaking ESL Students
French are bad at speaking English, it's a fact, proven by many studies but also by the shameful spectacle of our politician trying to say things in Shakespeare's language. The Elite not having a decent level it is hard to blame the population for not trying very hard. International studies are all putting French students at the last position in Europe for mastering English skills. Even more alarming in 2008 the TOEFL results were putting France at the 69th rank on 109 countries. In 9th Grade, only 14% of the students have an "independent level" according to a 2011 study of the European Commission (we also note that only 9% of English 9 graders are "independent" in... How Important are Phonology and Pronunciation in the English Language Classroom?
As a speaker of 5 languages (French being my native one), I've been exposed to different ways of teaching how one particular language sounds and why it sounds that way, what kind of meaning is conveyed using what sounds in what order, and so on. Quite often, I've noticed that in the school system, not enough emphasis is put on studying the sounds that pertain to the language itself.

How to Adjust Your Teaching to the Needs of the Beginner Students
As the term beginner students refers to the level of students knowledge, I have decided to focus on beginner level in different age groups. Therefore, this essay will be divided into teaching beginner young students and beginner adults. My definition of a beginner student is the following: regardless of age, this is a learner with very little or no previous knowledge of the English language. However, there are certain things we should aim to know about every age group:

Consciousness on Classroom Sensitivity
Cultural sensitivity is important to bear in mind as we all face situations daily: whether in our working environment or on a personal level. Within the Western English speaking world, we can see that there is the presence of a dominant culture (such as European American, or Western Culture) and a secondary culture (such as African, Chinese, or Eastern European culture). It is always important to bear in mind that while the English language may be widespread over the globe, the differences in culture even between people living within the same country has a profound effect on how interactions take place. In the environment of the classroom, the same examples can be seen. Whether the students... [Read more]

The English Language's Most Surprising Peculiarities
The English language is a peculiar, fascinating beast to teach and to learn. It comes with a long legacy of Anglo-Saxon and Norman invaders, empire-building, and globalization of the 20th century. With multiple layers of rules and culture, it overflows with idiosyncrasies and peculiarities to confound native and learning speakers alike. Whether it's pronunciation, grammar, or even just the system of time, English is a welcoming lingua franca and an intimidating coil of strangeness at the same time.

What You Need to Know About Japanese Students' Challenges Before Teaching in Japan
Japan is a country with a long history, deep tradition, and vibrant culture. Within this culture sits the Japanese language. At first, being a spoken language and then adopting the Chinese Writing System, Japanese has grown and changed into what it is today. If you look at all languages, most Western languages originate from a set family, such as Romance Languages (which became today's Spanish, French, Italian, etc). But Japanese (as most Asian languages) was formed from entirely different roots. These fundamental differences mean that the method of learning these languages has a lot to do with memorization and repetitive practice of the Chinese... [Read more]

The ancient Romans called Rome “The Eternal City” as they believed it would go on forever and indeed this seems to be the case. Even if you have never visited Rome before you have probably seen the city in films and are familiar with some of its monuments and landmarks such as the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and of course the Vatican City. In fact, the entire centre of Rome is a UNESCO world heritage site.
Rome hosts many festivals as well. Exhibitions, concerts, Expo and other shows and events take place throughout the year and themes include everything from technology, fashion and modern art to theatre, music and dance from all over the world. The city is brimming with history, arts and culture. From the... [Read more]

The lively and modern city of Phoenix is undoubtedly a great location for completing your TEFL/TESOL training course. If the great outdoors is not your thing, no problem, you will find plenty of other things to see and do during your stay in the ‘Valley of the Sun'.
The area now known as Phoenix has been the home of Native American people for over 200 years, however, the modern city has a much shorter history. Since its initial founding in the 1860s, Phoenix was nothing more than a small and insignificant town until its naming as the capital of Arizona in 1912. Over the... [Read more]

Teaching English to Older Students: ✅ The Pros and Cons

Well, whatever comes to your mind, I can tell you it sounds like having an extended family that warms you up and makes you feel at home. Older students could be like loving grand-parents, great-uncles or great-aunts, and apart from relatives, caring neighbors and dearest friends. Actually, you may find out they are active pensioners, retired teachers or scholars, culture lovers, as well as humble workers without school-leaving certificates and, above all, passionate people and happy learners: these are senior students.
