My Vietnamese Experience: Challenges for English Learners in Vietnam - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Teaching Ideas
I have traveled throughout Asia for some forty-five years, Vietnam is now my home. I always found the younger generations had a thirst for knowledge, particularly English as a second language. The difficulties of acquiring the knowledge under what was a repressive regime have diminished somewhat, but the major stumbling blocks to acquiring good English are the lack of experienced Vietnamese teachers, interaction with English natural speakers, and knowledge of the outside world in general.
The Importance of English
Elementary levels tend to be more difficult to teach, as they usually consider the class as a social event, more of a relief from a state school.
Intermediate levels tend to be more studious but have difficulty with interaction.

Phonetical Challenges for Vietnamese English Learners - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Alumni Experiences
Phonology is the system of sounds that exist within a particular language, while phonetics is the study of how speech sounds are produced. One difficulty for all learners of a second language is learning how to produce new sounds by moving the mouth, lips, and tongue in new ways. Several other languages also share the Roman alphabet with English but do not pronounce letters and combinations of letters the same way. These learners need to learn the English phonology so that when they read English, they will know how to pronounce the words they read correctly, and so that they speak English with a more native-sounding accent.

Have young English learners in other countries faced the same problems as those who are in Vietnam? Some may appear alike but the others may occur differently.
