First Language Acquisition and How it Informs Our Approach to Teaching Second Language - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Teaching Ideas
This topic, in particular, is of great interest to me as someone who managed to acquire two languages (Mandarin Chinese and English) at a high level. For me the journey was completely painless and the word 'acquired' is fitting since I personally never felt I had to actively undergo a 'study' to learn either language, but this statement is dependant on how we define studying and learning languages, and in turn: teaching languages. People often use the phrase 'It's like learning a whole new language' when trying to express how difficult and confusing it is to learn something, yet learning new languages shouldn't be harder than learning any other subject or skill.

Why Should Students be Praised for their Achievements in the Classroom? - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Teaching Ideas
Even though some people might disagree with the idea of praising students in the classroom, I hold a strong belief that it is of paramount importance. Praising assists teachers in making students aware of what they have attained. It can be done verbally, through body language or in writing. Nevertheless, praise should be timely, honest, and measured. It could be mutually advantageous for teachers and students. The former will benefit from cementing a healthy relationship with the latter; and the latter will be able to strengthen his or her confidence. Conversely, it could have a detrimental effect on both. For this reason, I will exemplify the advantages and challenges in praising that I have come across in my career as an English Teacher.

To teach English to non-native speakers in your home country, having a TEFL (Teach English as a Foreign Language) certificate can be highly beneficial. While requirements vary from country to country and even within institutions, a TEFL certificate is often a preferred qualification for teaching English. It demonstrates that you have received training in teaching English to speakers of other languages, making you a more competitive candidate in the job market.
In many cases, having a TEFL certificate is not a strict requirement, especially if you are a native English speaker or have a degree in English or Education. However, even in such cases, having a TEFL certificate can still enhance your chances of getting hired and may lead to better job opportunities and higher pay. Additionally,... [Read more]
