The Effects of Teaching Vocabulary Learning Strategies on EFL Learners Vocabulary Development
Vocabulary has always been one language area about which students usually complain and claim that it impedes language learning. The main purpose of this study is to investigate whether using the context for guessing the meaning of new vocabulary can solve this problem. The learning of vocabulary is an important part of foreign language learning. The meaning of new words is very frequently emphasized, whether in books or verbal communication. And also, English teachers have an important role in teaching new vocabularies. In this research, we will study different kinds of teaching vocabulary by using a dictionary or guessing on the context.... [Read more]

Phonetics: How can Phonemic Awareness Facilitate Effective Reading?
Phonemics according to the Merriam Webster dictionary is a branch of linguistic analysis that consists of the study of phonemes. In other words, it could be explained as the study of the sound system of a given language and the analysis and classification of its phonemes. Phonemics awareness, on the other hand, is the ability to examine language independently to its meaning and to manipulate its component sound[1].

Child Development: How Do Children Develop Language?
Child development may be defined as a gradual sequence of physical, language, thought and emotional changes that occur from birth to the beginning of adulthood. In this process, there is a progression in a child from being sorely dependent on the parent/guardian to be self-dependent. Such development is strongly influenced by the genetic factors emanating from the parents and similar events during prenatal life. According to Maria Montessori Theory, such a journey from childhood to adulthood the key principles to be borne in mind are independence, observation, following the child, correcting, need for prepared environment and an absorbent mind. In all of these, the aspect of speech... [Read more]

Which ‘English’ Should I Teach?
English is a language that has a variety of dialects: particularly, there are three different major English segments. English (American ), English (Australian), and English (British or Uk). The three segments have differences in the way they are written and spoken. In this article, I will compare American English versus British English and my own experience with these two.

Zero Conditional Explanation
Conditionals are a fundamental part of English grammar that every teacher should know like the back of their hand. Let's take a look at the zero conditional below.
What is the Zero Conditional?
Zero conditionals are used for facts that are generally true and do not change. They refer to a general situation that always happen (for example in the rules of a game or laws of physics) if a condition is met. The condition always has the same result.
The zero conditional uses the present simple in the if clause and in the main clause.
Zero conditionals are also called "Type 0 conditionals" (general truth – general rule).

Pronunciation Challenges Students Face in China
Every learner of a foreign language may face pronunciation problems now and then. Languages that belong to one language group have more in common in phonics and are usually easier to learn to pronounce correctly. But such languages as English and Chinese are so different, that Chinese learners (and I bet English speaking learners of Chinese too) often have many difficulties in pronunciation.

Teaching Idioms and Slang: Why Learning Idioms and Slang Connects Cultures
When it comes to learning a new language, the way that we make it comfortable for us is to try and relate it to our language. How many times have you met someone from another country and you ask them how to use swear words or how to say something is cool in their native language. Since English is very commonly spoken all over the world, for students to learn idioms and slang is for them to not only learn how to say certain things but get a deeper cultural understanding. With that deeper understanding comes relativity to their own lives, which means they see the ways that we are more similar instead of different.

Is Teaching an Innate Gift or an Acquired Skill?
"Everyone who remembers his education remembers teachers, not methods, and or techniques. The teacher is the heart of the educational system" – Sidney Hook. Teaching is as ancient as time and its ways of imparting knowledge have evolved throughout the centuries. Past behind are those days when children were considered wicked and in need to be reformed (Hobbes' view). Likewise, it stopped being a one-way relationship where teachers had a dominant position and students were just mere recipients of data. Looking back at my school days, I compare teaching now and then. And even though roles and methods have made a 180 degrees turn, it has made me wonder why I can't remember my... [Read more]

Multiple IntelligencesIt is well known in the teaching world that there are many types of learners with skills and strengths in a variety of ways of learning. The Multiple Intelligences (MI) Theory, originally developed in 1983 by Howard Gardner, suggests that there is a set of typical profiles which describe the different types of intelligences that all individuals have. Originally, he named seven types and by 1999, he had added two more.

2 Common Problems Facing Learners of Different Nationalities
Growing up in a minority family, the language barrier was always a boundary that I had every intention to overcome. With this in mind I am in a unique position to relate to other students whose mother tongue is not English. Learning a new language is not an easy task, so is teaching English to students of different backgrounds. The combination of cultural differences and assimilation to a new environment snowballs into a dilemma that a teacher faces when teaching students of different nationalities.

The Importance of Slang and The Way to Teach it to Young Learners
Language textbooks are a good source for language learners and teachers, especially new language learners or teachers who may not know exactly where to begin. However, while textbooks are a valuable resource, they do not teach students everything they need to know when it comes to interacting with native speakers of the target language. This is because all native speakers use some level of slang in their everyday speech, in the classroom, and even in their workplace. For this reason alone, ESL students need to begin learning common slang they may hear.

The Most Common Problems Students in Nigeria Face When Learning English
In recent times, it is safe to say that the English language is one of the most spoken languages and widely preferred L2s according to the Oxford dictionary. For communication to be successful, however, certain criteria need to be met. For instance, one must not only study the forms or shape of things but must also adhere to the formation of words and phrases alike in order to craft well-formed sentences, along with understanding the meaning of each word, phrase or the relationship between two words. Whether they differ or are similar in terms of phonetics and spelling before actually making use of it, it is important to note that anything contrary to this will... [Read more]
