Why Exposure is Important when Learning a Second Language - TEFL Blog
Mark Crocker
Alumni Experiences
Unlike learning a first language, learning a second language is a task that can sometimes seem frustrating and at times even impossible. There are many reasons for this as learning a second language is very different than learning your mother tongue. Firstly, there are biological factors involved and the fact that normally children tend to assimilate things more easily than adults. Secondly, it is often harder to get the same level of exposure to the language than it is when learning a native language where repetition from parents etc. is constant. That is why when you sign up for an English class, or any other language for that matter, teachers will try to replicate that scenario with endless repetitions and fun games, because the most crucial thing is... How Learning a Second Language is Different from the First - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Teaching Ideas
By the time a child is a year old, they can differentiate between the sounds that make up their first language but can't distinguish between sounds that aren't found in their first language. Even in the case of sounds that children may not be able to correctly produce until they are six years old, such as the /r/ sound. So, it would make sense that by the time a child is just a year old the way they learn language changes, as stated in Dr. Ryalls' class. Further on when a child is finally in school they have some grasp of grammar, even if it isn't complete by the time the child is school-aged. This means that by the time a child is in school when they would most likely start learning a language, they already have to contend with the differences in the... [Read more]

How Do We Teach English as a Second Language or English as a Foreign Language? - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Teaching Ideas
Language as a second language or as a foreign language consists of classroom course material and student-teacher components that require a certain educational environment to be taught. Language acquisition starts from early childhood to the critical age of 13 years. Born into a natural language environment, the child begins to process the language pragmatically thanks to its sound, environment, and natural language skills.

The Global Benefits of English as a Second Language - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Teaching Ideas
At a very early age, I was amazed by the sounds of English. I used to listen to songs in English while one of my parent's friends was cleaning his car. He used to play them out loud and I wanted to know what the lyrics said. Several years later I had the chance to go to China to be part of a cultural exchange program to learn Chinese. My accepting interview was completely in English rather than Chinese or even my native language Spanish. All paperwork was done in either Spanish or Chinese depending on where I was. Either here in Latin-American or on the other side of the world, the medium of communication was English.

Problems Japan Faces in Developing English as a Second Language - TEFL Blog

There are several challenges Japan faces when it comes to learning English as a second language. Japanese culture is a bubble. Everything, including their ad signs, TV, games, government, studies, work and even the internet is filled with one language; Japanese. In a world of globalization, where your goods and services can come from literally any part of the globe. Japan is one of the few remaining homogenous cultures where English is still seen as an optional language. As the global economy becomes more global, the English language will likely become less optional, but essential. In addition to the cultural issues, Japan's English curriculum in the school is largely unchanged from the '60s according to my Japanese cousins and uncles still living in... [Read more]

Teaching Ideas
Anyone who has tried to learn a language as a second language is likely to express at some stage or another how difficult it is. We speak of absorbing our first language and having to work hard for our second. We will often look towards those who have learned more than one language at the same time, bilingual for example, as being lucky and that the path was easier for them. So, is the first language easier to learn and why, and can we use those techniques to learn or teach a second language?

Teaching English as a Second Language in Small Communities in America - TEFL Blog

There is currently a need for more people willing to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) across America. Several small communities have accepted immigrants from other countries. Although children of school age will learn English in school, the parents and grandparents struggle to learn English as they continue their daily lives and earn a living. This is a challenge as most Americans do not know any other languages as they do in Europe, so the immigrant needs to communicate in English to accomplish anything. This leaves the older generation feeling isolated and causes problems in everyday life, such as going to the bank. In most large cities, finding an ESL class is easy.
