It's Not Rocket Science: Teaching Slang and Figurative Speech in English Classrooms
Understanding the use of slang in a different language is a benchmark for fluency. Once a speaker is able to navigate society by listening and speaking slang, they are better able to assimilate among native speakers. But whether or not colloquial speech has a place in English classrooms is debated among teachers. While formal English takes precedence in many classes, teaching slang can be important depending on students' reasons for learning English and their experience with the language. Incorporating slang can also be a motivational tool for teaching disengaged students.

Beginner Students: Easy to Teach Them or Not?
Being a student at the elementary or beginner level in any language, not just English, is not only a challenging task when beginning to learn the target language but also a clean slate to progress the learning in the correct way. Having never learned English before, it can sometimes be a difficult feat of where to begin. However, this allows the teacher to start the student or students off in the correct way so that the challenges for the student will become less and less as they progress through the language difficulties.

Punishment in the Classroom: Is it Correct or Not?
Since we should appraise students, we should punish them as well. I do not believe that the decision of whether or not to punish is up to us. Therefore, discipline is a key to success for both teachers and students. Thus, once we deal with a bad conduct case, there are strategies to use to overcome it.

Every teacher, particularly those starting their careers, inevitably stumbles upon some mistakes in the classroom. The key to improving as a teacher is recognizing these errors. In this article, we will examine some of the most common pitfalls new teachers encounter and how to steer clear of them as you grow in experience.
Don’t talk too much
One of the most frequent mistakes by novice teachers is monopolizing the conversation during lessons. Remember, students need ample opportunities to practice speaking the language, which fuels their progress. Limit your talking to essential instruction and steer clear of irrelevant chatter. Encourage students to read answers and provide peer feedback. Maximizing student talk time equates to maximizing their... [Read more]

Learning Difficulties: ✅ Not a Roadblock that Can't be Overcome
Everyone has a personal genius. It's not up to us to change people, but rather to help individuals be the best they can be with the skills, strengths, and abilities they already possess. The way we go about teaching individuals with learning disabilities will require us to be creative, looking beyond conventional teaching methods. Humility will also be necessary, for we may be the problem rather than the learning disability itself. Will we be humble enough to accept this truth and then use it to improve our skills as teachers? As teachers, the ability to look outside the box and to be able to assess ourselves honestly will be... [Read more]

Being a Good English Teacher Even if You’re not a Native Speaker
As a Spaniard in love with languages, I can't start this essay without saying anything other than, "it's not who the teacher is, but the will of teaching that they have". Through all these years of learning English, I just know for sure that a learner learns more when they live in and with the language throughout each day. They need to become hooked to it, and it does not matter if the person who transmits this feeling is a native speaker or not.

I have run my own businesses for many years. Is a level 5 TEFL the same as a CELTA?
A Level 5 TEFL course and CELTA are both classified as level 5 qualifications, indicating they share a similar degree of rigor and difficulty. However, it is crucial to note that while they are on the same level, they aren't synonymous. ITTT's Level 5 TEFL is designed to give new teachers a significant advantage in the job market, broadening their employment opportunities. Yet, even though it is on par in terms of level, the content, methodology, and delivery of a Level 5 TEFL and a standard CELTA course can differ considerably. Why Teaching Business English Isn’t As Difficult As It Seems
As a former teacher of English as a foreign language, I have some experience teaching business English. Majority of my classes were for general English conversation. However, as I continued teaching, my workload increased to include a few business-focused classes. At first, I was intimidated and nervous about teaching these students. Did I have enough knowledge about business to teach them? Would I have the information they needed? After a lot of preparation and a few lessons, I realized that business classes are not much different than regular English classes and I need not know much about business to be a successful business English teacher.

English is a unique and fluid language, its usage changing rapidly throughout surprisingly short periods, throughout different socioeconomic groups, and across different regions. Therefore, it is widely understood that proper English and spoken English have different rules, importantly including the use of popular slang terms and idioms. This means that when someone is learning to communicate with native English speakers, they must learn expressions that will provide a certain context.

What are EFL countries?
EFL stands for English as a Foreign Language, a term primarily used to depict scenarios where English is taught in countries where it isn't the dominant language. Within these countries, students often learn English for academic reasons, international travel, or personal interest, and their exposure to English might be limited mostly to classroom settings. A classic EFL example would be a classroom in Rome, where a British instructor teaches English to Italian students.
