Child Development stages in relation to ESL Teaching

1. Sensorimotor stage
2. Preoperational stage
3. Concrete operational stage
4. Formal operational stage
Theories of Child Development
Child development unfolds in distinct stages, each marked by profound changes in cognition, language acquisition, and social interaction. Just as children progress through stages like sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational in their cognitive growth, so too do students learning a second language move through predictable stages of language acquisition. From preproduction to advanced fluency, these stages reflect varying degrees of language proficiency influenced by factors such as educational background and cultural exposure. For ESL teachers, understanding these stages is... [Read more]
Top Reasons to Teach Vocabulary to ESL Students - TEFL Blog
Elizaveta Pachina
Teaching Ideas
According to David Crystal (1941), 'Vocabulary is a matter of word-building as well as word-using.' While this may be true and speaks to the fundamental usage of vocabulary in any language, vocabulary can also be seen as world-building. Vocabulary is 'the body of words used in a particular language' (Google, 2019). While the aforementioned clearly identify why it is important to teach vocabulary, this essay will try to explore it a bit further.

The Importance of Teaching Slang to ESL Students - TEFL Blog

Teaching Ideas
In January, I stood in front of a class of breakthrough English students at a university in Bogotá, Colombia. I'd never taught students in an ESL classroom before, but I was pretty confident having seven years of experience under my belt and a degree in literature. I was naive. I began the lesson with the class that my co-teacher had lent me for the first time. The objective of the lesson was to practice using past tense through storytelling; five minutes into it, I called on a student with his hand in the air. " What up, My Nigga!" He said it and I almost lost all of my composure on the first day while I should have been thinking about building rapport.

Why Should ESL Teachers Consider Teaching One-to-one? - TEFL Blog

ESL teachers can find themselves in various classroom situations. An ESL class may be advertised or posted on signs for students to show up at a learning center on a particular night. When the students arrive, they are most probably tested and grouped according to language level. What happens if many students are at the same level, but there is one student who is on a completely different level and has different needs? Other scenarios may put teachers in a situation where they are teaching one-to-one. Possibly, there is just a desire to tutor English language learners in a more personal setting. Some people might think that the methodology is of greater importance than any other teaching aspect. Yet teaching is based on human relationships. Therefore it is essential whether the teacher manages to establish harmonious interactions between faculty and students. Bernieri defines these interactions as 'rapport' (Galzier 2016). According to Frisby and Myers, rapport is "the ability to build a relationship based on trust and harmony and is considered to be a positive and prosocial behavior that is relationally powerful enough to enact cohesiveness, reduce the threat, and structure social interaction (Fleming 2009)." Multiple studies have shown that rapport has a significant effect on students' motivation,... [Read more]

Stories are also used to enhance children's concentration skills and develop moral and emotional intelligence by teaching students to empathize with the characters in the story.
