Tue, 03 Sep 2019 Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas Evaluation and Testing of Chinese Native Speakers Learning English The issue of testing and/or evaluation is an important topic in general, however, it is of personal import to me because I currently work as a full-time ESL teacher in China, over half of who are pre-school and kindergarten age. In China, children begin primary school (first grade), at age seven, plus they have three years of mandatory kindergarten, which begins at age four. English is not taught in Chinese public schools until primary school (grade three), and then, for only forty minutes, three times per week. Rapport With Students From Day 1 - TEFL Blog

Fri, 18 Oct 2019 Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas Rapport With Students From Day 1 Establishing rapport with students can be challenging sometimes, especially if this is a class of students who've already had different teachers or the students change around a lot. When there is inconsistency in teaching style or people, it can be more difficult for students to create a more meaningful bond. One of the key things I've always found in establishing rapport is to be friendly, positive, kind, consistent and understanding. There are different ways a teacher can show this. The way s/he introduces her/himself and shows interest in students initially, the level of professionalism displayed, the teacher's attitude towards students, the reward system put in place and the expectations set among...  [Read more]

Why Do Parents Need to Learn English too? - TEFL Blog

Thu, 25 Jun 2020 Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas Why Do Parents Need to Learn English too? In my opinion, a parent should learn English too. Learning English is a long trip for every kid. Taking China, for example, Chinese parents let their kids accept English language education when they are two or three years old even earlier. Chinese parents want their kids to get more vocabulary, fluently speaking, and get familiar with the English-communication environment. But this situation only happened in language training school which has foreign teachers(English native speakers) and use English during the class. It means that parents pay a lot of money to let their kids have the environment. But most kids only have one-hour of the environment per week. How does the environment work? How...  [Read more]

Is Tutoring Better Than Teaching a Group? - TEFL Blog

Fri, 17 May 2019 Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences Is Tutoring Better Than Teaching a Group? At its core, the same teaching principles and skills must be required and initiated for teaching one student or a group of 30 students. However, the key difference is time. An academic hour is 50 minutes, take 5 minutes to warm up and five minutes cool down, and this leaves 40 minutes for a class of 30 students. If one was to speak directly with every student, this equates to 1.33 minutes per student. Obviously, it would be pointless to do this, as not alone would each student get such little time as not to be of benefit. With one to the one, you get to spend the full 50 minutes with one student. Learning a language, be it a person's native language or a second language, it takes time and...  [Read more]
