7 Fun Reward Systems That Will Keep Your Students More Engaged
Teaching children can be challenging. If you're teaching an adult, chances are, they're there because they want to learn. Most children, however, would much rather be watching their favorite TV show, so it's important to make the class fun and engaging. One of the best ways to do this is with a reward system. Plan a reward system with 4 to 6 rewards and give one to the student periodically throughout the class when they have done a good job. You can use this to reinforce good behavior and to encourage the student to try harder so that they get more rewards. All of my reward systems rely on a whiteboard the students can see. The rewards will be placed on the... [Read more]

How Сan We Decrease Teacher Talking Time and Why Should We?
Have you ever had the experience of saying a fictional character's name out loud to someone for the first time and they don't know whom you are talking about even though you're reading the same book? I have and it was a confusing feeling. The thing I have learned about English is that to truly learn it, you need to speak it. When we learn English by speaking it out loud we can avoid the mistakes of mispronouncing words that we have only ever read in our heads. This is the primary reason I think we need to decrease teacher speaking time in class and dramatically increase student speaking time when we are teaching our students English.

How to Teach Students With Different Learning Styles
Jeremy Harmer, in his book How to Teach English, discusses different learning styles of students. He states that everyone responds to stimuli like photos, pictures, sounds, music, and movement, but that some things stimulate student learning more than other things do. Harmer cites Richard Bandler and John Grinder's neuro-linguistic programming theory which states that everyone has a preferred stimulus (e.g. visual, auditory, or kinesthetic) which they respond to above all others. Students who have a visual preference will remember things better if they see them. Those with an auditory preference are more likely to recall things they hear. Kinesthetic learners are influenced by... [Read more]

Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that we should start with a clean board. Students have a tendency to read what is on the board, so if anything has to be pre-written, cover it up with paper until it is needed.
Secondly it's always very useful to make a board plan so that you know where things are going to appear on the board by the end of your lesson. It is very simple to do a board plan,... [Read more]

The Covid-19 pandemic began all of sudden and covered the world with silent panic and frustration. Quarantine rules provided by governments influenced all social spheres of life, including education. Schools were closed, and the teaching process was stopped. A solution was quickly found: universities, schools, and even pre-schools started giving lessons online. Alumni Experience of Teaching Young Students Online
Teaching English online has been a great experience for me. For the past two years, I have been able to provide English lessons to Chinese students between the ages of 4 and 14 through a platform called VIPKID. It is a platform that allows Chinese parents to partner their Children with North American English teachers via the Internet. The platform provides all of the lesson materials that are easy to follow after training and participating in workshops with more knowledgeable teachers. It is an impressive platform that has positively impacted my teaching experience.

How TEFL Course Inspired Me in My Teaching
"Why do I have to take a TEFL course?" I asked this question when my daughter suggested to me to enroll in this course. Having decided to say goodbye to my current job as an international homeroom teacher, I am now embarking on a new journey of applying abroad for a teaching position at an international school. Thanks to the Americans who defeated our Spanish colonizers way back the 19th century, they brought their educational system to the Philippines. Ever since I started school, I have been taught the American way using the English language as the medium of instruction. However, even if I am learned in English, I have to get a TEFL course to prove my competence in the English... [Read more]

The importance of a pre-planned lesson cannot be understated, having a plan is paramount to the success of the lesson and to achieve the desired teaching point in a structured way. Computer-Aided Language Learning
Computers are becoming more and more common in the classroom. While they should not be relied upon as the main or sole source of teaching, they can be very helpful for students and teachers in the classroom. One of the complaints about Computer-aided language learning (CALL) is that computers can be costly and it requires many of them to teach, but that does not have to be the case. In fact, computers can be cost-effective in that almost all other teaching equipment and their features can be used on one or a few computers. Part I of this essay will discuss the advantages CALL has over other forms of technology. Part II will discuss the useful activities and applications of CALL in the classroom.

Games in the Classroom
There are many games that can be used in the TEFL classroom, from simple games that only require a pen and a whiteboard to more elaborate board games. There are some games that have been specifically designed to be used in English language classes, while other, everyday games that we usually play for fun can also be adapted to be used with your students. You can even create your own games!
There are many misconceptions about using games in the classroom. Some people believe that studying should be serious and that there is no place for this kind of “entertainment” in the classroom. Others believe that games are only for children and that adults are not interested in playing when they should be studying. Neither of these assertions is true, research and... [Read more]

Online teaching is booming, and it's an amazing opportunity, but working for an online teaching company also has its pitfalls: it's hard to tell which companies are legit, wage information can be scarce, and you can be treated like a number rather than a person. The internet is unfortunately full of online teachers' horror stories of being treated like replaceable commodities. To make matters even more confusing, social media is crawling with recruiters and teachers posting referral links to work at their companies. It's hard to know who to trust!

Skills Required for Productive Classroom Management
Classroom management is essential to its overall function and health. There are several skills and techniques that teachers use to better educate the students. A strong teacher-student relationship helps this process immensely. When a teacher pours into a student, the student has a desire to be present in the classroom. They want to be there and enjoy learning more than if they see the teacher as just a "head of the classroom" figure. Of course, there can be a fine line between being too much of a friend versus a teacher. You want to have a good relationship with the students, but they have to know you still are in control.

A lesson plan is a working document that serves as a reference point for teaching. A lesson plan is also a record; it can be referred to in any future lesson by the teacher. It also serves as a guide for a teacher who is covering an absent teacher. It helps the teacher to know how to carry out the lesson. This means that a lesson plan has to be simple and clear for another teacher to understand.

For students to benefit most from their time in the classroom, they must feel at ease, focused, and engaged with what they are doing. Before any sort of lesson can begin or homework administered, I believe that creating an atmosphere where the students can feel like they are being set up for success is key. Managing a classroom, from the very first day of introductions, to when problems and issues arise and through to final tests, is key in creating space where students can feel comfortable learning.
