Teaching vocabularyOne of the most difficult aspects of teaching English to esl students is vocabulary. native speakers learn vocabulary through immersion and trial and error. From when they are very young, they pick up most of their basic vocabulary from their environment. The ESL student does not have the benefit of this method of language acquisition. What is the difference between EFL and ESL?
Given the widespread use of English in global media, government, and business, it is no surprise that hundreds of millions of people are learning English worldwide. Catering to this immense demand are countless teachers, both native and non-native English speakers, instructing in schools, language centers, private firms, colleges, universities, and online classrooms globally. Although these teachers often have a robust understanding of the English language, they may not necessarily be familiar with the multitude of acronyms used within the industry, including EFL, ESL, TEFL, TESL, TESOL, ELT, and more.

What is the difference between EFL and ESL?
ESL (English as a Second Language) pertains to students learning English while living in an English-speaking environment. In contrast, EFL (English as a Foreign Language) is for students learning English in a country where it isn't the primary language. Essentially, the distinction lies in the learning context: ESL learners are surrounded by the language daily, while EFL learners study English in settings where the primary language isn't English.

Why Drilling is a Common Teaching Method in an ESL Class
Drilling is a teaching method used by teachers, teaching languages or other subjects, all over the world. Generally, drilling involves the teacher saying or modeling something to the class and the students repeating it. There are many ways of using the drilling method. Some teachers may use it sparingly in class while others may use the method so often it becomes the main way their students acquire new information.

Traditional Point of View on The Teaching Job
According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, a teacher is defined as one who teaches or ones whose occupation is to instruct. A good definition however in today's society I believe that the teacher's role has more meaning and is not that simple. And as the years go by it has continued to grow. Before starting my career as a teacher I highly agreed with the first definition but after spending a little over six months inside of the classroom I realize how much more a teacher role can be. The role of a teacher not only fosters the growth in students academically but also provides mentoring, role modeling and several other components.

8 Classroom Activities that are Great for Kinesthetic Learners
Kinesthetic learners are learners that learn through objects that they can touch and explore. They also learn best by discovering and experiencing and particularly enjoy physical activities that involve getting out of their seat and moving around. Unlike visual and auditory learners, kinesthetic learners can be tough to accommodate in the classroom because of their need to be physically active. Since they need to be active in their learning, they may get bored very quickly if you allow them to simply listen and look at your visual aids or video presentation. As teachers, we must always be versatile and understand how to incorporate different types of... [Read more]

The Importance of Slang and The Way to Teach it to Young Learners
Language textbooks are a good source for language learners and teachers, especially new language learners or teachers who may not know exactly where to begin. However, while textbooks are a valuable resource, they do not teach students everything they need to know when it comes to interacting with native speakers of the target language. This is because all native speakers use some level of slang in their everyday speech, in the classroom, and even in their workplace. For this reason alone, ESL students need to begin learning common slang they may hear.

What is Motivation and How to Increase it in the ESL Class?
I think being a teacher it is not only to study. This profession includes so many roles such as being a friend, parent, psychologist, etc. It depends on many factors like age, nationality, size of the group of students, or individual student. One more very important factor is motivation. To find out why motivation plays a key role in building rapport between teacher and student first we need to define the meaning of it.

I would like to start by first explaining what means to teach, which by a vague definition is to cause the student to learn and acquire the knowledge that is taught in the classroom to meet all the objectives that are previously set by the institution and by the teacher. In other words, the process of teaching is formulated and organized in such a psychological and educational way for both the learner and the teacher to be able to attain some prearranged goals.

Approaches to Teaching English Vocabulary to ESL Students
Learning new vocabulary is considered as an integral part of learning a new language. Even children who learn their mother tongues learn isolated phrases and words before making complex sentences. Similarly, in second language learning, teaching new words and phrases plays an important role in helping learners' communication. Based on David Wilkins "without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed". If learners spend their time on learning grammar, their English will not improve greatly. However, if they learn more words, phrases, and expressions, they can express almost anything (Thornberry, 2002; Watkin, 2005).

Games in an ESL Classroom: Are They Really That Important?
Did you say games in a classroom? Is that even possible? Many people around the world cannot imagine or accept that education can be fun too. However, it is very important to motivate, entertain and vary the class activities in order to avoid class boredom. Entertainment in class is also important because it helps to establish rapport in the class (it creates a relaxed, fun and motivated environment) and it works as an evaluation tool (gives us information about the student's' knowledge). One particularly telling definition of games was explained by Diane Ackerman, a famous American poet and essayist, who stated that "Play is our brain's favorite way of... [Read more]

Are Teachers Responsible for Students’ Willingness to Learn English?
Teachers of Foreign Language classes, in which students are not very successful at learning the language, usually find themselves in situations, in which their teaching abilities are placed under scrutiny and they are required to provide viable explanations for their student's failure. As no one likes to be placed under a microscope, the teachers often find a culprit and it is usually the students' level of motivation. The students themselves, however, are almost always said to be bursting with talent and ability (Chambers, G.N, 1999).
