Teaching Speaking in an ESL Kindergarten
In teaching kindergarten level students, I find that three important aspects must be included in every lesson. Each lesson must contain parts that allow the students to "warm-up" their English skills, they must also have a chance to drill the vocabulary and target language, and lastly, the classes must have activities that give the students a chance to practice using their vocabulary and target language in a relatable activity.

Will TEFL certification help you teach English?
In the same way that we would expect our surgeon, dentist or airline pilot to have undertaken some training, our students of English might also expect their teachers to be trained and competent.
What does it mean that our English teacher is competent? Possibly there are two major components to the answer:
1. The teacher has adequate subject knowledge.
2. The teacher has some classroom delivery skills.
So how can taking a TEFL certification provide this knowledge?
First you need to find a course that offers these components.
While many native English speakers have learned the rules of English grammar sub-consciously as part of their language development, this does not give them the necessary subject knowledge required to teach English. So... [Read more]

Rocket Science of Being a Teacher
Teachers are arguably one of the most important figures in society. They are the people that shape and influence society. Teachers have been around since the beginning of time. Some remarkable teachers, such as Jesus and Buddha, continue to leave their influence on society today. Many great teachers have similar qualities. It doesn't matter where they came from. What made them great was that they had a passion for what they taught, led by example, and had a sincere desire to make a difference. In my opinion, the role of a teacher is to have these three qualities and the rest will follow.

Qualities of a Good ESL Teacher
Becoming a teacher of any nature requires a good amount of skills, but becoming an English as a foreign or second language teacher requires a special batch of skills. All types of teachers should have the same general qualities; communication skills, patience, good listening skills, the ability to connect and build relationships with students, hard work ethic, preparation, and organization, and be friendly, personable, and approachable. Being a teacher means interacting with people for most of, or part of the day, and understandably sharing your knowledge, with the students.

Sources and Significance of Motivation in Second Language Learning
In acquiring a second language, the end goal of the student and teacher should be shared. The student ultimately wants to acquire at least some level of proficiency in the second language, while the teacher wants to assist them in that task. For most learners, this is a difficult journey that includes a lot of rote memorization and potentially anxiety-causing first-hand practice. Without sufficient motivation, it can be extremely difficult for students to consistently study for the long hours that may be required. It may also prove overwhelming for them when they try to practice the language in the real world. If they are embarrassed about making mistakes, they will... [Read more]

How Can Knowledge of First Language Acquisition Aid Successful Second Language Acquisition?
Successful acquisition of a first language (otherwise known as an L1) has almost a 100% success rate. Aside from a few people that are unable to read or write everyone can communicate fluently in their L1. Successful acquisition of a second language, however, does not occur nearly as often. Why is this so and can anything be learned from first language learning to improve second language fluency.

Native Language Experience in Second Language Acquisition
A language is a tool for people to communicate, so there must be some connections among different languages, include similarities and differences. If we can use their similarities properly and pay attention to differences, different languages can be interlinked. Therefore, the first language not only has a positive impact but also hurts second language acquisition. We call these effects 'language transfer'. There are two kinds of language transfer, positive transfer, and negative transfer.

Why it is Important to Know the Difference Between ESL and EFL
Just like any profession, teaching English has specific terms and acronyms that can be used to describe the job. While teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESOL) is an overarching term to describe the job of teaching English to those who do not use English as their native language, ESL (English as a Second Language) and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) must be distinguished. ESL and EFL describe different locations, purposes, and techniques for teaching English. Additionally, it may be beneficial for instructors to experience teaching both ESL and EFL to be a well-rounded and sympathetic instructor.
