Discipline in the classroomWhether one teacher adults or kids, maintaining discipline in the classroom is essential to being an effective EFL teacher. The following article will attempt to explain the factors which influence classroom disciple and how to respond to problem behavior should it arise.. Firstly, age of the students. Younger students have a lot of energy when compared to adult students. Hence, the teacher should involve the younger students with interactive and physical language games. Motivation also plays a key element in discipline. young learners usually lack motivation as they usually don?t attend the language courses out of their own free will. This lack of motivation might affect their disciple. On the other hand, adult students tend to be motivated as they have made a conscious choice to attend the language course. It is however quite possible to find adult students which are not motivated. In both instances, with regards to younger and adult students, the teacher can prevent discipline problems from arising by making the lessons creative, interesting and varied. Another issue which influences discipline is class size. In large class sizes, students might get bored and feel that they are not getting individual attention. To tackle this, the teacher can have a lot of group work so that students get a chance to interact with their peers. It is also easier for the teacher to monitor the groups as a whole and then give feedback at the end of the activity. students that have family problems may also exhibit rude and aggressive behavior in the classroom. To deal with this kind of behavior can be extremely challenging for the teacher. The teacher has to first identify the cause of the rude behavior and try to be non judgmental and a good listener. It is only by being sympathetic to the need of the students, is the teacher able to win his/her students? respect. Another reason for discipline issues is a student?s low self-esteem. In this scenario the teacher has to make sure that constant praise and encouragement is offered to the student. Over time, the student will start to feel more confident in the class and participate in classroom activities more often. Lastly, lack of respect for the teacher and other students usually causes a lot of friction in the classroom. The teacher should try and not let personal feelings influence the treatment of such students. In such situations, the teacher should try his/her best to control the situation. However, if all fails, the last course of action might be to refer the student to the head of the department or the school principal. There are several reasons to discipline issues in the classroom. This article only highlighted a few of them. A good and experienced teacher will be able to identify these reasons effectively. It is essential that the teacher acts immediately and doesn?t wait for the problem to worsen. By keeping calm, being consistent and fair and by maintaining a good rapport with the students the teacher is able to prevent discipline issues from arising in the first place.
