Teacher or Tutor: Are they the same, or different?
As the function of a tutor is that of a teacher, the certification requirements for EFL tutors are the same as that for EFL teachers. There are generally three different certification routes to obtaining the main qualification required, namely, Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certification. They both involve a course which typically has a minimum of 120 hours of training.

There are three typical types of courses which result in this certification.

2. Online TEFL/TESOL certification

Group Teaching or Private Lessons?
First of all, there's a great difference between teaching one-to-one and groups. Some teachers prefer teaching one-to-one as it gives teachers a better opportunity to focus on one student rather than giving attention to many students. Also, there are differences regarding the classroom of each type. For example in teaching groups, classrooms are more formal. That's why there would be more discipline in classrooms of groups. On the other hand, in teaching one-to-one, the classroom can be anywhere either in the student's home if lessons are private or even in the teacher's home.

Is Language Innate or Learned?
Language is amazing. It is not only a skill essential to human communication but also an instrument of thought. Every day, and from a very young age, we use language to express our feelings, needs, and frustrations. We also use it to bond with others and create connections, thus making life more meaningful. So how do we learn this beautiful thing called language? Is it an innate ability that we are born with or do we have to learn it from scratch? These questions have always divided linguists and elicited a great number of theories.

Establish Rapport or Teaching's a Bore
Establishing a rapport with my students has been the most 'natural' part of my teaching experience. When I started my teaching career about ten years ago, ideas like classroom management and lesson planning were alien to me. I struggled immensely trying to learn strategies to excel in that area of education. Establishing relationships with my students was easy and always seemed to just happen for me. As the years have passed, I've been able to reflect on my time in the classroom and I've discovered some common denominators relating to me why exactly students are drawn to me (and me to them!). I think other people can learn from my interactions with the students who have passed through my... [Read more]

Have To or Must - The Differences
"Have to" and "must" are both used to show that something is necessary, but there are some differences. Let’s understand how to use these words with some with natural English examples below.
The two expressions "have to" and "must" both show that something is necessary, but there are some differences.
Have/Has to do (something)
If we have to do something it means it is necessary and we are required to do it, for example:
MUST do (something)
"Must" can be used in the same way as "have to", such as here:
It’s getting late, I must go. = It’s getting late, I have to go.
-> "Must" can be used to give your opinion or recommendation.

Games in the Classroom: Good or Bad?
Are games in a classroom a good idea? There seem to be two trains of thought regarding this. Games in the classroom can be seen as being a good thing and also seen as a time-waster and something that shouldn't be used at school once a student is out of the early years of elementary school.

Teaching Groups or Individual Students: What's Better?
What do you know about speaking and teaching English? Well, the answer to the first part of the question goes back to early times. I started to study English when I was between ten or eleven years old. I can say that after a few classes, I was already able to say short, simple but probably still inaccurate sentences. However, teaching English appeared as a possible professional job a long time after that.

ESL Classroom Discipline: ✅ Concern or Treasure?
Discipline in the classroom is a point of concern for any teacher, be it new or experienced. Since it is a learning center, we expect the students to be disciplined, which is correct. However, to expect the same from the students, a teacher's core responsibility is to set the right expectations in the student's mind. The students must be following the same. Every new teacher is worried and split thoughts regarding what to follow and what not to as there is a fine line between being strict and being a disciplined teacher. If you are severe, you are hated. If you are liberal, you are taken for granted. But bear in mind that it is not a fast-track... [Read more]

The Consequences of Misbehavior: Punishment or Care?
My personal opinion is that teachers should not "punish" students for bad behavior. That said, I also believe that if words or actions transpire in the classroom that is not allowed, or are inappropriate or disruptive, the teacher should address the situation to reduce the risk or likelihood of it happening again going forward - however, in a positive, constructive, solution-based way.

Multiple Tenses: Boon or Bane for ESL Students
Tenses- Usually it creates tense for many ESL students during communication. It defines and differentiates the situation by time. Is time important in communication? Yes, it is. The wrong usage of tenses changes the exact meaning of the situation, what the speaker is trying to convey. So focusing tenses in grammar is more essential than others. Still, the proper usage of tenses is a complicated and confusing task for many high-level students in competitive exams. Then, what about the ESL students?

Is getting a TEFL or TESOL certificate difficult?
When compared to the requirements to become a regular subject teacher in a state school in most countries throughout the world, entering the TEFL/TESOL market is relatively easy. In a state school a teaching degree is normally required. Gaining a teaching degree (B.Ed) usually takes three or four years of study dedicated to gaining subject knowledge and teaching skills. Whilst the same two areas are covered in any TEFL or TESOL certification course, the time taken to complete the course is greatly reduced. The typical TEFL or TESOL course may only take 120-hours. The teaching of EFL therefore offers you the opportunity to enter the teaching profession in a very short time, compared to... [Read more]
