What is a hagwon and are they a good place to work? - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ TEFL FAQs

What is a hagwon and are they a good place to work? The term hagwon is used in South Korea to describe a particular type of school. The South Korean education system has two major components, the public school system and the private school system. Many South Koreans make use of both these systems, attending the government-run public schools as normal in any country and then taking additional lessons in a private school, particularly for additional learning in subjects such as English. A hagwon is therefore a private educational institution in South Korea where students can gain additional teaching in subjects which are seen as important for their education. It is estimated that during their education, 95% of South Korean students will make use of a hagwon. As such these private...  [Read more]

What is a hagwon and are they a good place to work? - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ TEFL FAQs

What is a hagwon and are they a good place to work? A hagwon is a specialized educational institution in South Korea, distinct from the standard public school system. It operates primarily as a private academy, catering to students who seek supplementary education, especially in subjects like English. While the public school system offers foundational education, hagwons focus on enhancing and refining a student's knowledge. Approximately 95% of South Korean students enroll in a hagwon at some point in their educational journey, indicating their significant role in the Korean academic landscape. Given their prominence, hagwons present a vast majority of employment opportunities for EFL teachers in South Korea. However, potential educators should thoroughly research individual hagwons and...  [Read more]

Teaching at a Language Academy in Korea - TEFL Blog

Tue, 04 Feb 2020 Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences Teaching at a Language Academy in Korea For those of us who have a desire to teach English as a foreign language in Korea but decide to forego a formal TEFL certificate, language academies (or, "hagwons") are one of our most prominent and accessible options. In the year 2018, fresh out of my undergraduate program, I joined the ranks of many enthusiastic (albeit, mostly untrained) teachers bound for privately-run English academies. The opportunity to travel, visa sponsorships, housing benefits, and the job, itself, make hagwons an attractive option to aspiring teachers with no formal training or little practical teaching experience. What Problems South Korean Students Face While Learning English - TEFL Blog

Mon, 15 Jul 2019 Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences What Problems South Korean Students Face While Learning English Koreans take education very, very seriously, yet there are many problems for learners in South Korea. Society deems those who are not good at studying as lazy, and good for nothing, therefore most students study to death. Literally. They go to school extremely early, finish around noon, and then stay at a cram school until late at night. They repeat the same routine over and over again every single day. They even have to study during vacation. This results in students that do not study because they are motivated or because they want to, but simply because they are forced to, and if they do not, they can't enter the college they want or land the job they've always...  [Read more]

Should a TEFL certification be Mandatory for Teachers? - TEFL Blog

Mon, 27 Jul 2020 Elizaveta Pachina TEFL Information Should a TEFL Certification be Mandatory for Teachers? The importance of a course such as a TEFL is easy to overlook when you consider the multitude of teaching jobs that are available around the globe that require no teacher training whatsoever. In many countries, the only requirements are that you have some form of degree and are a native speaker. For those looking to travel whilst earning some money, these countries can provide a good balance of income and culture, as well as easy access to other countries in the area. However, whilst this is beneficial to the 'tourist teacher', it can often lead to substandard teaching methods. For an example of this, I need not look any further than myself.
