What is the best method for teaching English? - ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ TEFL FAQs
What is the best method for teaching English?
We will follow a largely chronological order as we delve into the different strategies for teaching English, from time-tested methods to modern approaches.
The Classical Method
This approach, also known as grammar translation, was originally used for teaching classical languages like Greek and Latin. It places a strong emphasis on grammar, particularly verb conjugations and language rules.
The Direct Method
Also known as the "natural approach", it strives to mimic the way we acquire our mother tongue naturally. Consequently, only the target language is employed, prioritizing speaking and listening skills.
Audio-Lingual Method
As the name suggests, this method primarily emphasizes listening ('audio') and speaking ('lingual') abilities. It... [Read more]

The Relevance of the ESA Methodology for EFL Teaching
The acronym ESA stands for Engage, Study and Activate. The ESA methodology of teaching English as a foreign language is one of the most progressive and productive methods. It draws its strengths from the other teaching methods that were used before it. The ESA method incorporates the good aspects and advantages of the old teaching methods thereby making it a powerful method. Some of the earlier teaching methods from which the ESA teaching methodology drew its strength are the task-based learning, the communicative language teaching, the community language learning, the silent way, the suggestopedia, and the lexical approach. The ESA method has therefore managed to take the positive... [Read more]

The History of The ESA Approach
My first exposure to learning a foreign language was back in the 1950s watching French lessons on the National Education Network, the predecessor of PBS. The only thing I can remember from the experience was the word Ecoute, listen, which I did little of. Latin classes in Junior High, followed by Spanish courses in High School and College did little to help me as an adult. The teaching methods used were both classical, grammar-translation and Audio- bilingualism, both tried and true relics of the past, and in some cases the present.

How to Teach English Knowledge Instead of Teaching Skills
What comes to mind when one thinks of an English classroom? Is it organized rows of desks filled with students writing vocabulary and grammar into their notebooks while the teacher talks in the front? This is the classic image of a classroom. A student goes to school to learn what they don't already know. When teaching English, it can be easy to fall into the trap of rote memorization and reliance on grammar and vocabulary. However, is this method effective? Does this way of learning motivate students to become lifelong learners of a foreign language? It is less useful to teach students many things than to teach them the skills needed to... [Read more]

Drilling vs. Other Teaching Methodologies: ✅ Is it Still Effective?
The author and motivational speaker Hilary "Zig Zig" Ziglar wrote, "Repetition is the mother of learning, the father of action, which makes it the architect of accomplishment." Drilling is defined as a teaching technique or method used when teaching a new language through extensive repetition by students, also aided through audio, oral, or even optical channels or props. As with other teaching methods, repetitive drilling has both advantages and disadvantages and has been deemed effective and ineffective over the years.

What I’ve Learned from Teaching at a Montessori Kindergarten
Choosing a course was an important task for me given my background in a business career and corporate environment. Teaching was a very new experience and I wanted to ensure I had adequate training to provide a solid foundation with which to grow in a teaching capacity. I made sure to commence an in-class TESOL course which offered the opportunity to practice what I had learned in a real classroom environment. The course I chose was perfect for this as it was taught in a real school and allowed me to use my newly learned skills in the classroom.

Benefits of Computer-Aided TEFL Teaching
I have never met a person who is not interested in languages because of their attraction. Learning a foreign language appropriately, correctly, and faster is the concern of most non-native speakers, which propelled them to seek effective methods for learning languages. This process yielded a new field of research called Computer-Aided Language learning or CALL, which is "the use of computational methods and techniques as well as new media for language learning and teaching." Consequently, most modern learning languages focus on technology applications, where using computers and electronic devices plays an important role in the learning process.
