Living in Ho Chi Minh City and Vung Tau

After nearly 30 years under communist rule, Vietnam has its sights firmly fixed on becoming the next Asian Tiger. The pace of growth is phenomenal, but not without its drawbacks. Traffic, pollution and petty theft are the major gripes of resident expatriates. Although minor on an international scale, they do exist and must be taken into account by anyone wishing to spend time here.

Located in the South of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam's second city and the country's economic and commercial hub. Despite its population of 5 million people, HCMC, (also known as Saigon), is not large and maintains a small town atmosphere. Extended periods under French rule have left a city of narrow streets and tree-lined boulevards. Dilapidated colonial villas have been taken over by foreign companies and governmental departments and restored to their former glory.

The Saigonese are extremely warm and friendly people. Westerners are welcomed and integration into the community is commonplace. Teachers are particularly highly regarded and well respected by the Vietnamese.

Vung Tau is approximately 120 km southeast of HCMC, at the mouth of the Mekong River. The town has an average temperature of 28?C and a rainy season which, like HCMC, runs from May through to November. There is some 20 km of coastline of soft-sand beaches in the immediate area, although the beaches close to the city aren't as nice as those further north, away from the city limits.

In past years Vung Tau was known as a laid back sea-side resort, famous for its fresh seafood and proximity to HCMC. These days, however, Vung Tau is better known as the focal point of the burgeoning oil and gas industry and is home to a host of ex-pat oil workers and their families. Amidst the recent development Vung Tau still retains a small town atmosphere with quiet streets and seaside walk ways. Like HCMC many of the older colonial villas have been refurbished by the foreign companies and governmental departments that have taken them over. It was, and continues to be, an ideal weekend retreat for city dwellers.

The information below was written in regards to HCMC but much of it applies to Vung Tau as well.

Useful information

Accommodation
Accommodation here is mostly shared housing. You can expect to share with 1 - 3 people in a typical Vietnamese style house - 4-metres wide, 3-storeys. The bedrooms are likely to be air-conditioned, while the common living area will have a ceiling fan.

Travel and Transport
(Around the city) Although the city is large and sprawling, the main business district where the bulk of foreigners live and work is quite small and most journeys take less than 15 minutes. The bus system has been upgraded in recent years and older run down buses have been replaced with new locally built models. However, as the bus system can be confusing and the city is small - with most journeys taking less than 15 minutes - expats generally prefer taking taxis, which are very cheap. The first two kilometres cost about 12, 000VND. Motorbike taxis are even cheaper and often used by foreigners. (5, 000VND for a short trip).

Driving in the city can be hazardous, as the laws of the road are not always observed. Traffic is heavy, especially at peak periods and most people travel by motorbike (100cc).

(Outside of the city) Roads in the city and between major centres are generally good, but travel to smaller locations can often be time consuming and a little difficult. Cheap and relatively comfortable bus services are available between the main cities. There are flights and rail service to most cities and resorts.

Below you can read feedback from an ITTT graduate regarding one section of their online TEFL certification course. Each of our online courses is broken down into concise units that focus on specific areas of English language teaching.

This was a very difficult unit for me. The introduction of so may different subjects that the average native English speaker never really considers. Subjects such as intonation, word stress, sound joining, and the phonemic alphabet were a challenge for me. I will need much more experience to teach this subjects in this unit. After completing this unit, I believe I will have the courage and confidence to teach it in the future.I really enjoyed learning about the parts of speech and a bit of linguistics in this unit. I particularly found the phonemic alphabet interesting and useful for any language learning. I intend to incorporate the things learnt in this chapter gradually and in short segments in sporadic lessons, because while I feel it is very important and useful for students, it can be seen as quite tedious and uninteresting for some students.
