When past tenses are taught, it really depends on the age of the students. If they are young, it may not be a good idea to explain when a certain tense should be used. However, if students are adults, explanation will probably be a good method. Moreover, practice is really important. In Chinese, we do not change the form of the verbs, so sometimes it is easy for students to forget to use the past tenses. This unit provides a good examination of various teaching methodologies. The ESA approach seems effective and flexible. One matter that was confusing in the presentation was the discussion of elicitation near the introduction of the ESA approach. It seemed a little out of place there. The discussion on correcting students is very useful, along with the plethora of ideas for implementing the ESA approach.
