A warm climate throughout the year, long stretches of beautiful beaches and an abundance of sport and leisure activities make San Diego the ideal place to take a TEFL/TESOL course and to start out as an English teacher. Known as the birthplace of California, San Diego was first settled by Europeans when the Spanish arrived in 1769. However, San Diego didn’t really begin to thrive until the arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century, and then the establishment of several military installations during the 20th century saw San Diego rise to the bustling metropolis that it is today. One of the main attractions of the city is Balboa Park, a vast recreational area covering over 1,100 acres. The park includes a number of museums, including the San Diego Air and Space Museum, several theaters, San Diego Zoo as well as delightful gardens and 65 miles of trails for hiking and biking. In addition, there are several sports facilities including lawn bowls, tennis courts and a public swimming pool, not to mention various shops and restaurants.
As you would expect with any large city there is a thriving nightlife, with bars, restaurants and shops catering to all budgets centered on the historic heart of the city known as the Gaslamp Quarter. This area hosts many festivals and events throughout the year including Mardi Gras and St Patrick’s Day celebrations. If city life gets too much for you, head for one of the many beautiful beaches that are no more than a stone’s throw away. Chill out in the sun or take part in the many watersports on offer, and when you are done sit back and relax at one of the many boardwalk cafes.
