Online TEFL vs Onsite TEFLTEFL, an abbreviation for teaching English as a foreign language, refers to native english speakers teaching English to foreigners. Teaching English has always been around however it is becoming a much more popular profession. Although most schools require some kind of degree in teaching or a tesol certificate, a lot of the teaching English programs simply require the applicant to be a native english speaker and a TEFL/tesol certificate would be a plus. With the rise in wanting to teach English abroad, there has been a wide variety of choices an individual can choose to go with to complete their respective certificates. The many alternatives include getting a degree through an accredited college, taking a month intensive course, and/or even through online. The latter two have been the most preferred. However a majority of people considering getting their certificate always question which method is a better fit for them. So what exactly are the similarities and differences between taking an online course vs. an onsite class? According to the International Teacher Training Organization?s website, it is one goal just two different methods. An aspiring English teacher at first may be confounded with the choices they have; online course or onsite? There are countless benefits to both methods; it just comes down to the individual and their preferred method. The main similarity between these two methods is the course content; they both cover the same subjects/topics. However the differences between the two are slightly more. For starters, the cost of each course. The price for the onsite classes tend to be more expensive. For most schools, the case for this is because they provide an opportunity for the learning-teachers to actually teach several times to a group of students. For an online class, this is impossible. The second difference is flexibility. For an onsite class, they require individuals to come in on certain days for a certain amount of time. students have to make time out of their schedule to fit in their class. However with an online course, students can continue with their busy schedules and work on their course whenever they are free, it is all up to the student?s will. A final difference is the way the course is structured. Although the content of the course is alike, the way it?s taught is distinctive. In an onsite class, there is a teacher who will give lectures and go over vital points and provide homework. As for an online class, an online tutor will send via e-mail unit readings and the homework for that lesson. Once the homework is completed, the student sends it back to their respective online tutor. There are many pros and cons to choosing either the onsite or online course. In the end, it really all depends on the individual and what really works best for them. When choosing from the two, they should consider the following: time flexibility, cost, and group or independent studying. Receiving a certificate in TEFL/tesol can open up many gateways to the world, one of the many reasons for its high popularity and demand.
