online tefl courses vs onsite TEFL coursesThese days there are many courses available for people wishing to become teachers of English as a foreign or second language. There is the online tefl course and there is the onsite tefl course. The online course is primarily done through the internet. The tutor provides the course work as well as assistance by e-mail and the student returns the work by e-mail as well. The onsite course is held in a typical classroom setting, usually at an international location. It usually lasts about 4 weeks. Both these courses are meant for the same purpose, which is to provide knowledge in order to become a qualified English language teacher to students of foreign languages. These two courses both have their advantages and disadvantages that will be explained in this article. The advantages of taking an online tefl course are the cost and flexibility. Most students who want to take a tefl course do not have much income and therefore would choose the option that is less costly. Taking an online tefl course is substantially cheaper than taking an onsite tefl course. Additionally, since the course is online you can complete the course at your own pace and work on assignments whenever you have spare time. In comparison, when taking an onsite course you would need to dedicate at least four weeks to go to an international location to complete the course and it would certainly cost much more. Most students do not have this kind of time or budget so they would rather choose the online course option. The advantages of taking an onsite course would be the in person interaction with an instructor and classmates who are also pursuing to teach English. students are able to receive help and have their questions answered much more quickly in a classroom environment. As well, students are able to help each other and give advice to each other regarding contents of the course or general teaching tips. Furthermore, a lot of schools require TEFL certified teachers to have real classroom experience, which online students do not have. Another advantage of an onsite course is being able to find a teaching position easier after completion of the course, because TEFL positions are usually offered at nearby schools around the TEFL training school. As explained both courses have their good points and bad points. It really depends on the individual to choose which option is suitable for their budget, time and convenience. In my case, I chose an online tefl course because it was affordable and I could work on it whenever I had free time. As well, the teaching jobs that I want to apply for all require a tesol certification. I believe that anyone that wants to teach students of English as a foreign language should definitely take either the online or onsite version of the tefl course, especially if they have no previous experience in teaching English. The course provides the required knowledge to be a qualified and exceptional tefl teacher. After completing this course I am very satisfied with the knowledge I have gained and will put it to good use at my future job in a new environment.
