Will TEFL survive AI?

TEFL is likely to survive AI because language teaching is not only about delivering information. While AI can explain grammar, generate practice activities, correct writing, and provide speaking practice, effective English teaching also depends on human skills such as empathy, encouragement, cultural understanding, adaptability, and classroom presence. These are areas where real teachers remain essential. AI will probably change the way TEFL teachers work. Teachers may use AI to create worksheets, adapt reading texts, design role-plays, offer personalized homework, or give students extra practice outside class. This can save time and make lessons more engaging. However, students still need teachers to guide communication, correct errors in context, build confidence, manage group interaction, and respond to individual needs in real time. For TEFL professionals, the best approach is not to compete with AI but to learn how to use it responsibly. Teachers who understand both language teaching methodology and educational technology will be well positioned for future opportunities. A TEFL certification course, such as those offered by ITTT, can help new teachers build a strong foundation in lesson planning, grammar awareness, classroom techniques, and learner support. In short, AI will not make TEFL disappear. It will raise expectations and reshape the profession, but skilled, adaptable English teachers will continue to be valuable in classrooms and online learning environments.
