Where is TEFL recognized officially?

TEFL is recognized in many countries around the world as a practical qualification for teaching English as a foreign language, especially by private language schools, online teaching platforms, summer programs, and international education companies. However, TEFL is not regulated by one universal government authority, so “official recognition” varies depending on where you want to teach and who is hiring. In many regions, employers look for a TEFL certificate of at least 120 hours, often alongside other requirements such as a bachelor’s degree, teaching experience, or native or fluent English proficiency. Some countries may also have separate visa or work permit rules, which are not the same as TEFL recognition. For example, a school may accept your TEFL certificate for employment, but immigration authorities may still require additional documents. Online TEFL certification is widely used by teachers applying for classroom and online English teaching roles. Providers such as ITTT offer TEFL and TESOL course options designed to help teachers build lesson planning, classroom management, grammar awareness, and teaching methodology skills. The best way to confirm recognition is to check job ads in your target country or contact employers directly. In general, a reputable 120-hour TEFL certificate is one of the most commonly requested qualifications for entry-level EFL teaching positions worldwide.
