What can TEFL teachers negotiate?

TEFL teachers may be able to negotiate several parts of a job offer, especially before signing a contract. Common negotiable items include monthly salary or hourly pay, overtime rates, number of teaching hours, paid preparation time, class size, student age groups, schedule, start date, contract length, and opportunities for professional development. In some jobs, teachers can also discuss paid vacation, sick leave, housing or a housing allowance, airfare reimbursement, health insurance, end-of-contract bonuses, and support with visa or work permit paperwork. How much you can negotiate depends on the location, school type, local hiring demand, and your experience. A first-time teacher may have less leverage than someone with a TEFL/TESOL certification, a degree, classroom experience, or specialized skills such as teaching young learners or business English. Private language schools, international schools, universities, and online teaching companies may all have different levels of flexibility. The best time to negotiate is after receiving an offer but before signing the contract. Be polite, realistic, and specific. Instead of asking, “Can I get more?” explain what you are requesting and why. For example, you might ask whether housing support is available or whether overtime is paid separately. ITTT graduates are encouraged to read contracts carefully, compare typical local conditions, and make sure all agreed terms are written into the final contract.
