Is TEFL harder than TESOL?
TEFL is not generally considered harder than TESOL. In most cases, the difficulty depends on the specific certification course rather than the label. A 120-hour TEFL course and a 120-hour TESOL course may cover many of the same core topics, including grammar, lesson planning, classroom management, teaching skills, and methods for working with English language learners.
The main difference is usually in focus. TEFL, or Teaching English as a Foreign Language, is commonly associated with teaching English in countries where English is not the main language. TESOL, or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, is often used as a broader term and may include teaching English learners both abroad and in English-speaking countries. Because of this, some TESOL programs may include a wider range of teaching contexts, but that does not automatically make them more difficult.
What makes a course challenging is the quality and depth of the training. Courses with tutor support, written assignments, grammar modules, teaching practice, or observed lessons can require more effort than basic introductory programs. If you are new to grammar or lesson planning, either TEFL or TESOL may feel demanding at first.
ITTT offers online TEFL and TESOL certification options designed for different goals and experience levels. The best choice is usually the course that matches where and how you want to teach, rather than which title sounds easier.
