Is TEFL enough for international schools?
TEFL can be valuable for working with English language learners, but it is usually not enough by itself for most international school teaching jobs. International schools, especially accredited or well-established ones, typically look for teachers who have a recognized teaching license, state certification, PGCE, Bachelor of Education, or similar qualification from their home country. This is especially true for classroom teachers in subjects such as math, science, primary education, humanities, or early childhood education.
Where TEFL can help is in ESL, EAL, or language support roles. Some schools hire teachers specifically to help non-native English-speaking students develop academic English, and a TEFL or TESOL certificate can strengthen your application for those positions. It may also be useful if you already have a teaching credential and want to show that you understand language acquisition, lesson planning, classroom management, and communicative teaching methods.
For candidates without a formal teaching license, TEFL may open doors in private language schools, tutoring, online teaching, and some private or bilingual school roles, depending on the country and employer. However, requirements vary widely, and TEFL should not be seen as a replacement for licensed teacher status in the international school sector.
If your goal is international schools, consider combining a TEFL certification from a provider such as ITTT with a recognized teaching qualification, classroom experience, and subject-specific expertise.
