How does TEFL accreditation work?
TEFL accreditation helps show that a TEFL or TESOL course meets certain training and quality standards. Unlike some professions, TEFL does not have one universal global accrediting authority. Instead, course providers may be reviewed by independent accrediting or quality assurance organizations that evaluate areas such as course length, curriculum design, assessment procedures, tutor qualifications, and learner support.
A good TEFL course typically includes core topics such as lesson planning, classroom management, grammar awareness, teaching skills, and methods for teaching different language levels. Many employers look for a course of at least 120 hours, especially for entry-level teaching positions. Accreditation can add credibility, but it is also important to consider the reputation of the provider, the depth of the training, and whether the certificate is accepted by schools in the region where you want to teach.
When comparing courses, ask practical questions: Who accredits or externally reviews the course? How many hours are included? Is there tutor support? Are assignments assessed? Does the provider have clear course information and graduate support?
ITTT offers online TEFL and TESOL certification options designed to prepare new and experienced teachers for English teaching roles. Before enrolling in any course, it is wise to check the course details carefully and match the certification to your teaching goals.
