Has TEFL become more competitive?
TEFL has become more competitive than it was in the past, mainly because more people are earning TEFL/TESOL certifications and looking for teaching opportunities abroad or online. Popular destinations, well-known language schools, and higher-paying online teaching platforms often receive many applications, so employers may prefer candidates with a recognized TEFL certificate, teaching practice, a degree, experience, or specialized skills such as teaching young learners or business English.
That said, competition does not mean the TEFL field is closed. English remains a global language for education, business, travel, and international communication, and demand for capable English teachers continues in many regions. The key difference is that teachers now need to be better prepared and more professional in how they apply. A strong resume, clear lesson planning skills, confident classroom management, and familiarity with online teaching tools can make a real difference.
Completing a quality TEFL or TESOL course, such as those offered by ITTT, can help new teachers understand methodology, grammar, lesson structure, and student engagement. To stand out further, teachers can gain volunteer or tutoring experience, create a polished demo lesson, develop a niche, and remain flexible about location, schedule, and student age group. In short, TEFL is more competitive, but well-prepared teachers still have meaningful opportunities.
