Does TEFL require accreditation?

TEFL does not require accreditation in the same way that regulated professions require a government-issued license. There is no single worldwide authority that controls all TEFL certificates or sets one universal accreditation standard. Because of this, the term “accredited TEFL course” can vary depending on the provider, the accrediting organization, and the country or employer reviewing the certificate. That said, course quality and recognition still matter. Many schools, language centers, and online teaching companies look for a TEFL certificate that includes at least 120 hours of training and covers essential topics such as lesson planning, classroom management, grammar, teaching skills, and assessment. Some employers may also prefer certificates from established TEFL providers with a strong reputation in the industry. When choosing a TEFL course, focus on practical value rather than the word “accredited” alone. Check what the course includes, whether tutor support is available, how long the provider has been operating, and whether the certificate is suitable for your teaching goals. ITTT offers a range of online TEFL and TESOL certification options designed to help new and experienced teachers build the skills needed for English teaching positions. While accreditation can be helpful, the most important factor is choosing a reputable course that meets common employer expectations.
