Does accent matter in TEFL?
Accent does play a role in TEFL, but it should not be seen as the main factor in whether someone can be an effective English teacher. Students benefit from teachers who speak clearly, grade their language appropriately, and model pronunciation in a way learners can understand. A native-like accent is not required, and many excellent TEFL teachers speak English as an additional language themselves.
In the classroom, intelligibility is more important than sounding like a speaker from a specific country. Teachers should aim to pronounce words clearly, use natural stress and intonation, and be aware of common pronunciation challenges their students may face. It is also useful to expose learners to a variety of English accents because English is used globally in many different contexts.
That said, some employers or students may have accent preferences, especially in certain markets. However, strong teaching skills, a recognized TEFL/TESOL certification, lesson planning ability, classroom management, and confidence often matter more in the long run. Courses such as those offered by ITTT can help teachers develop the methodology and awareness needed to teach pronunciation and communication effectively, regardless of their own accent.
