Can I teach English without speaking another language?

Yes, you can absolutely teach English without speaking another language. In fact, many schools and language centers prefer teachers to use English as much as possible in the classroom because it gives students more exposure to the language they are learning. This is often called an immersive or communicative approach, and it is widely used in TEFL and TESOL teaching. You do not need to translate every word for students to understand you. Instead, effective English teachers use simple language, clear modeling, pictures, real objects, gestures, timelines, examples, and structured practice activities. For beginners, you can grade your language carefully, speak at a natural but manageable pace, and check understanding with questions or tasks rather than direct translation. Knowing your students’ first language can sometimes be helpful, especially for understanding common grammar or pronunciation challenges, but it is not a requirement. What matters more is your ability to plan lessons, explain meaning clearly, manage the classroom, and create opportunities for students to communicate in English. If you are new to teaching, a TEFL or TESOL certification course can give you practical strategies for teaching English without relying on translation. ITTT’s online TEFL and TESOL courses, for example, cover lesson planning, classroom techniques, grammar awareness, and ways to support learners at different levels.
