Can I teach English with only a passport?

In most cases, you cannot teach English legally with only a passport. A passport is an essential travel document, but it does not provide work authorization. To teach English abroad, you will typically need the correct visa, residence permit, or work permit for the country where you plan to teach. Requirements vary widely by destination and employer, so it is important to check local rules before accepting a position. Many schools also expect teachers to hold a TEFL or TESOL certification, especially if they do not have previous teaching experience. Some countries or employers may require a bachelor’s degree, a criminal background check, health documents, or proof of native or fluent English ability. Online teaching platforms may have different requirements, but they still usually ask for identification, qualifications, and sometimes tax or residency information. A passport can help you apply for jobs, enroll in training, and complete visa paperwork, but it is only one part of the process. Completing a recognized TEFL/TESOL course, such as those offered by ITTT, can strengthen your application and help you understand classroom methods, lesson planning, and grammar instruction. Before traveling or signing a contract, confirm the legal work requirements for your chosen destination and avoid employers who suggest working without proper authorization.
