Can I teach English in refugee centers?

Yes, teaching English in refugee centers is possible and can be a highly meaningful way to use your teaching skills. Opportunities may be available through nonprofit organizations, local charities, community education programs, resettlement agencies, schools, or international NGOs. Some positions are volunteer-based, while others may be paid, depending on the organization, funding, and location. A TEFL or TESOL certification is often helpful because refugee classes can include learners with very different education backgrounds, literacy levels, ages, and language abilities. Training in lesson planning, classroom management, grammar, and communicative teaching methods can make you more confident and effective. ITTT’s online TEFL and TESOL courses, for example, can help prepare teachers to create practical, learner-centered English lessons. Teaching in refugee settings also requires patience, cultural awareness, and flexibility. Students may have experienced interrupted education, displacement, or trauma, so a supportive and respectful classroom environment is especially important. Many organizations require background checks, safeguarding or child protection training, and sometimes previous teaching or volunteer experience. To get started, contact local refugee support organizations, community centers, adult education providers, or NGOs in your area. Ask about their requirements, training, and whether they need English teachers, conversation partners, or classroom assistants.
