Can I teach English in international schools?
Teaching English in international schools is possible, but the qualifications you need depend on the school, country, curriculum, and type of position. For full-time English language arts or primary/secondary classroom teaching roles, many international schools look for candidates with a bachelor’s degree, a recognized teaching license or credential, and previous classroom experience. Schools following British, American, IB, or other international curricula often have strict hiring standards.
However, there are also opportunities for English as a Second Language (ESL), English as an Additional Language (EAL), language support, or after-school English programs. For these roles, a TEFL or TESOL certification can be very useful. Completing an ITTT TEFL/TESOL course can help you build skills in lesson planning, classroom management, grammar awareness, and teaching methodology, all of which are valuable in an international school environment.
A TEFL/TESOL certificate alone may not qualify you for every international school job, especially at highly competitive schools, but it can make your resume stronger and help you qualify for language-focused positions. To improve your chances, consider gaining teaching experience, preparing a professional teaching portfolio, and checking each school’s specific hiring requirements before applying.
