Can I teach English at universities?

Yes, teaching English at universities is possible, but the qualifications you need depend on the country, the university, and the type of position. For full lecturer or faculty roles, many institutions prefer candidates with a master’s degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, English, Education, or a related field. Some may also look for university teaching experience, academic writing experience, or research credentials. However, not all university English jobs are the same. Many universities also run language centers, English for Academic Purposes programs, foundation-year courses, test-preparation classes, or conversation programs. These roles may have more flexible entry requirements, especially if you have a bachelor’s degree, a recognized TEFL/TESOL certification, and relevant classroom experience. Completing an ITTT TEFL or TESOL certification can help you build the practical teaching skills universities often value, such as lesson planning, grammar awareness, classroom management, and teaching speaking, listening, reading, and writing. It can be particularly useful if you are applying for English language instructor positions rather than tenure-track academic posts. To improve your chances, gain teaching experience, prepare a strong CV, collect references, and check each university’s requirements carefully. A TEFL/TESOL certificate can be an important step, but it does not guarantee a university job.
