This unit discusses different ways how young learners learn in order to know how they can be best taught such as knowing the learning and developmental theories, native language and 2nd language acquisition and the learning environment. There are many learning and development theories that have been created such as maturation, environmental and constructivism theories. Maturation theory states that there is a natural sequence of events that will take place, regardless of any other stimuli. The environmental theory is our behavior is a reaction to our surroundings and we are not preprogrammed. Young learner?s native language is learned by watching, listening, interacting and mimicking their surroundings. However, for second language acquisition, it?s learned through use not immersion, they learn the hard parts first, and they draw on their native language experience. The learning environment is a combination of the organization of the physical surroundings and the classroom atmosphere. An ideal classroom would have a semi-circle seating arrangement at all times. I learned that teachers can have more than one role in the classroom. They could have as many as six, maybe more such as instructor, facilitator, mentor, psychologist, counselor and policeman. Each is an important role to make sure the classroom functions properly.
