Reasons Why Speaking English as a Second Language is Vital and Beneficial
In an increasingly globalized world, English has become the lingua franca for the world. What is very interesting with English is that it is a kind of Frankenstein of languages and thus a great language to now be spread worldwide. English, which is based on a dialect of northern German, has massive infusions from the French after the Norman invasion of 1066, Norwegian and Scandinavian languages from the Vikings settlements in medieval England, as well as many other languages that have influenced it over the years. Will TEFL certification help you teach English?
In the same way that we would expect our surgeon, dentist or airline pilot to have undertaken some training, our students of English might also expect their teachers to be trained and competent.
What does it mean that our English teacher is competent? Possibly there are two major components to the answer:
1. The teacher has adequate subject knowledge.
2. The teacher has some classroom delivery skills.
So how can taking a TEFL certification provide this knowledge?
First you need to find a course that offers these components.

Language is one of the most significant aspects that differentiate humans from other species. Language acquisition is considered one of the most unique and impressive aspects of human development both psychologically and cognitively. Native Language Experience in Second Language Acquisition
A language is a tool for people to communicate, so there must be some connections among different languages, include similarities and differences. If we can use their similarities properly and pay attention to differences, different languages can be interlinked. Therefore, the first language not only has a positive impact but also hurts second language acquisition. We call these effects 'language transfer'. There are two kinds of language transfer, positive transfer, and negative transfer.

The Differences Between Learning Your First Language vs. A Second One
Learning a second language can feel like stepping into a whole new world compared to the way you learned your first language. When you learn your first language, you take in that language in a very natural and organic way compared to the way you might obtain your second language. The first language you learn is what you hear from infancy as you grow up, as it's the language you hear at home, on tv, at school and etc. And your second language will mostly be something you are taught in classroom which is not the same type of experience that you get from learning in your actual living environment.

First and Second Language Acquisition: What do Teachers Need to be Aware of?
Every person living in modern society has the first language; this is the language which we have learned fluently without conscious effort, it was taught to us as children by the people in our immediate surroundings, usually parents or caregivers. Not everybody, however, has a second language. Unless raised in an environment where there is more than one language spoken regularly (by multilingual parents or others whom we are in regular contact with), for most people a second language takes conscious effort to acquire, for a range of motivations, and usually through at least some form of study and education. Learners of a second language may, for example,... [Read more]

What Does First Language Acquisition Dependent On?
In general, linguists maintain that a first language is acquired, that knowledge is stored unconsciously, and that a second language is learned, meaning that knowledge is gained through a conscious study of the second language's structure. However, this distinction is not watertight and SLA can involve acquisition to a certain degree.
