I have experienced both types of these teaching styles and can relate to the students. In the first video the students learned little, if anything from the teacher; the class was boring, long, and made it a dreadful experience. The attitude of the teacher has a huge effect on the success of the lessons. As a teacher you will be far greater if you engage the students and have a happy and joyful attitude and approach. This lesson was pretty straight forward. The emphasis on engage, study and activate are noted. Although it may not make sense to teach the origin of words for the sake of saving time, I do believe that giving the origin and root reason for how the word became used in our everyday vocabulary is useful in engaging students. For example, you could tie the origin of words with history and significant historical figures.
