TEFL in Southern England

Date posted:2010-03-31 | Writer: British Study School | Email: [email protected]

We are looking for TEFL qualified teachers for residential placements at one of our summer schools: Ardingly (near Brighton), Cheltenham (Gloucestershire) or Ascot (Berkshire). Each working day consists of three sessions (morning, afternoon, evening + night duty).

All students follow either a 15-hour per week ‘General English’ course (mornings). Some students will also follow a 23-hour per week ‘Intensive English’ programme (mornings and afternoons).  Teachers deliver teaching sessions Monday – Friday, mornings from 9am –11am and 11.30am-12.30pm and some afternoons from 2- 4pm (afternoon teaching duties will be agreed with management on a rota system).

You will usually be required to teach an afternoon (intensive English) class for one week. Your social activity duties will naturally be reduced to compensate during this week).
When not teaching in the afternoons, teachers should fully supervise either afternoon or evening sports and social activities according to the rota system. This provides the ideal opportunity for developing a rapport with your students outside the classroom and being fully involved with them to ensure they have an enjoyable and safe stay.

Duties include:
To act in the welfare of students according to accepted professional standards at all times.
Complete weekly registers, student work records, end of course reports and any other administration required by the EFL Director/ Course Director.
To fully supervise students on any excursions or airport transfers and complete any duties such as registering student names.
Work positively as part of a course team and attend daily staff meetings.
To actively supervise breakfast, lunch and dinner queues on a rota basis (approximately 2-3 times per week).
To undertake house night duty on a rota basis, i.e., ensuring all students are in the house after the end of evening activity, then actively.
Supervising and registering students until lights out, ensuring house is quiet and students sleeping (approx 2-3 times per week).

We offer a salary of around £260/week (full-board residential) depending on qualifications and experience.

To apply, contact us at the e-mail address given on the job heading.

Below you can read feedback from an ITTT graduate regarding one section of their online TEFL certification course. Each of our online courses is broken down into concise units that focus on specific areas of English language teaching.

This unit was actually pretty difficult for me. I didn't know learning about pronunciation entailed so much detail. It's certainly something I took for granted and something I have to work to learn more about to be an effective teacher. I really wasn't aware of all of the intricacies that are involved in pronouncing words. It's very humbling to see how much some students may have to work at pronounciation.THis unit was helpful for thinking through different methodologies of teaching and for assembling different language teaching strategies and games such as word searches, anagrams, hang man, starter questions, fill in the gaps, alphabet games for naming multiple nouns etc. It also taught me that the engage part of the lesson should not be tightly monitored by the teacher but is more of a free flow of ideas.
