When is TEFL hiring season?

TEFL hiring season varies by region, school type, and local academic calendar. In many countries, the biggest hiring periods are January to March and July to September, as schools prepare for new semesters. Private language schools often hire throughout the year because students enroll continuously, while public schools, international schools, and university programs usually follow more structured recruitment cycles. In Asia, many employers recruit before spring and fall terms, often around February/March and August/September. In Europe, hiring commonly increases in late summer for September starts, with another smaller window in January. In Latin America, February/March and mid-year hiring periods are common, though private language centers may post openings year-round. Online English teaching is generally less seasonal, with opportunities appearing throughout the year depending on student demand and platform needs. A good strategy is to complete your TEFL certification early and begin researching jobs 2–3 months before you want to start teaching. Having a recognized TEFL or TESOL certificate, such as those offered by ITTT, can help you meet common employer requirements and feel more prepared for interviews and lesson planning. While hiring seasons can improve your chances of finding openings, job availability still depends on qualifications, location, timing, and employer demand.
