Is TEFL enough without a degree?

A TEFL certification can be enough to start teaching English without a university degree, but it depends on where and how you want to teach. Many private language schools, volunteer programs, tutoring platforms, and some online teaching opportunities accept applicants who have a quality TEFL certificate but no degree. In these cases, your training, English ability, professionalism, and confidence in the classroom can make a real difference. That said, some countries and employers do require a bachelor’s degree, either as a hiring standard or for visa and work permit purposes. This means that while TEFL can open doors, not having a degree may limit your options in certain destinations or with some higher-paying employers. Online teaching can also be flexible, but each platform sets its own requirements. If you do not have a degree, choosing a comprehensive TEFL course is especially important. ITTT’s online TEFL certification courses, for example, cover key areas such as lesson planning, classroom management, grammar, teaching skills, and student engagement, helping new teachers build a stronger profile. In short, TEFL can be enough without a degree for many teaching paths, but you should research specific country, visa, and employer requirements before applying.
