Is TEFL better than a teaching degree?

TEFL and a teaching degree serve different purposes, so one is not automatically better than the other. A teaching degree is usually the stronger option if you want to become a licensed teacher in public or private schools, especially for long-term careers in elementary, middle, or high school education. It often includes broader pedagogy, classroom management, child development, curriculum design, and supervised teaching practice. A TEFL certification, on the other hand, is designed specifically for teaching English to non-native speakers. It is generally much quicker and more affordable than earning a university degree, making it a practical choice for people who want to teach English abroad, teach English online, or explore international education without committing to a full degree program. Many entry-level English teaching positions request a TEFL or TESOL certificate, often with at least 120 hours of training. If you already have a teaching degree, adding a TEFL certification can make you more competitive for English language teaching roles. If you do not have a degree, a TEFL course can still help you build essential teaching skills, although some employers and countries may have degree requirements. ITTT offers online TEFL and TESOL certification courses for people who want flexible training focused on practical English teaching skills. The best choice depends on where you want to teach, the type of students you want to work with, and your long-term career plans.
