How long does TEFL remain valid?

In most cases, a TEFL certificate remains valid for life. Once you successfully complete a recognized TEFL course, the certificate itself does not usually have an expiration date, and you can continue to list it on your resume when applying for English teaching positions abroad or online. That said, employer expectations can vary. If your TEFL certification is many years old and you have not taught since earning it, some schools or online teaching platforms may want to see evidence that your skills are current. This could include recent teaching experience, professional development, or an additional refresher course. For teachers returning to the field after a long break, updating your knowledge of lesson planning, classroom management, grammar, and online teaching tools can be helpful. ITTT TEFL and TESOL certificates are designed to provide long-term value, and many teachers use their certification throughout their careers. To stay competitive, it is a good idea to keep your resume updated, gain practical teaching experience where possible, and consider specialized training in areas such as teaching young learners, business English, or teaching English online. So, while TEFL certification typically does not expire, staying professionally active can make your qualification stronger in the eyes of employers.
